    Hello Tundra Stans,
I currently own a 07 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7 and I've finally bought it off my dad. Currently it has about 240,000 miles on the odo and I want to preserve this truck as long as possible by giving it the best fuel possible. Its been in the family since it had 5 miles original on the dash and I don't want to destroy the fuel system in the truck, since Toyota recommends 87. However, I met a Toyota Tech that puts 91 in his 4.7 ( i dunno the year make and model of his tundra, but its a 2nd gen) and he recommends that I put 91 instead of 87 cause there are benefits to it and on other online forums people do recommend it. When is the best time to put 91 into the gas tank because I don't want to ECU the be messed up or anything in the fuel system. I someone want to explain this to me I would be extremely grateful.
Also the truck is completely stock other than general maintenance on the truck!!!!

Pretty good I changed the fuel injectors around 200,000 miles for regular maintenance, but I want more out of my truck and I know people run 91 on a stock ecu tune so i wanted more info from people that know more than I.

If it runs 87, and don't lag or knock keep running it. If it does, go up a grade, see if it helps. Run 87 in my '17 with no issues.

I’ll be interested to hear. I believe high octane is for higher compression engines. I don’t think there is a benefit to 91 for your truck. Popcorn time.

If the stock tune is configured for 87, which it is because that is what the manual recommends, there is no benefit to running higher octane.
If anything, you may lose a tiny bit of power running over 87.
But it won't hurt anything either.

Never heard of higher octane screwing up a stock ECU. I run 87 in my 255k mile truck with zero issues. Run some Berryman’s or fuel cleaner of your choice in the tank from time to time, and you will be fine.

I would just run top tier 87 from a station that gets lots of traffic. Higher octane isn't going to help anything unless, as mentioned above, you're getting knocking, which seems unlikely in a low compression engine that's designed for 87.

Eric, Toyota designed and engineered your truck to run just fine on 87 regardless of what a tech or people on the internet tell you. Reread @alb1k nuanced answer above one more time and let it sink in. The only thing running 91 is going to do is as another poster noted and that's make your wallet lighter. Enjoy your truck.

    Function before sparkle.
Higher octane doesn't mean a better or longer lasting engine in a 5.7 Tundra unless you already have specific low octane symptoms.

You're better to take the extra money you would spend on higher octane fuel and put it towards things that will matter like regular oil changes, extra car washes and maybe a wheel alignment.

Fuuuuu.... I know what you mean... man Costco $3.99... 50 cents end over end will get you. Free gallon of gas technically every 4 gallons...

    @EricB556
Im a fellow original 07 owner 5.7 with 240k.. 87 religiously except for base gas, that was 91 since it would give it idling issues and hesitation... enjoy your truck..

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us regarding your truck. It would be best to talk to Keith he owns an 2007, so he has hands on knowledge!!! He is out of the office most days, but is always available via phone. You can call or text him anytime at 760-877-4234. He does take many calls and texts a day, but is very good at getting back to everyone. Unfortunately, emails are just last to be responded to. Thank you for understanding.

    Thanks, Shawna

I am interested to hear what he says. I have a dual tune which is barely noticable in the 87 tune mode but when switched to the 91 tune there is a noticeable difference for sure. Admittedly my tune is not perfect so more may be possible

If you have a stock tune there will be no difference between 87 & 91 octane the gas isn’t any better the fuel will just have a quicker burn and the ECU will compensate if needed

I own 2 tundras, one just under 500k the other at 293k. Ran 87 since the day I bought them. No issues with either truck.

I typically run 89 in mine. Started doing that when I noticed our 4Runner seems to like it a bit better. What I mean by that is it seems to have a smoother idle when under load (at stoplights, in gear, on brake, with ac engaging/disengaging). Other than that, I don't really notice any more power or change in mpg in the 4R.

I'm not sure the 5.7 would be that picky, but it's habit now to just punch the 89 button.

If you can find ethanol free for a decent price, run it. I've seen 2mpg increase in the Tundra running ethanol free gas.

143K on the clock of my 2018. Ran 89 for about 3,500 miles last year, and saw zero difference in mileage, performance, sound, smell, knock, or anything else. Equated to an additional twenty cents per gallon for a guy that burns a lot of gas. Is it a lot? Nah. About $350-$400 per year at my rate. Other than that, I’ve been nothing but 87 E10. Zero troubles and just regular maintenance.

Just like that one new guy with 200K on nothing but high-test.

I think this is one of those things that people either buy into or they don’t. Kinda like tire pressure…. Run what makes you happy and what you believe in. Sometimes a placebo just tastes better!
