Is there a different sub I can get without changing everything? I really like the factory setup. Just wish it sounded clean with the volume up

I purchased a Rockford Fosgate replacement sub for the factory box, and it popped when the bass was pushed through it. I really think that plastic box design is not enough for the low profile speaker to breathe. I eventually went with a larger box and a 12" I also did an amp on the sub alone. I tapped into the speaker wire and ran power for the amp. I can't get any more volume out of the stock JBL head unit, but I can rattle the mirrors on my Tundra.

Fuel delete mod Cup holder upgrade
The stock head unit attenuates the bass to protect the door speakers. Upgrading the sub alone wont be much of an improvement because of this feature.

you can run a JL Fix86 connected to the JBL factory amp under the front passenger seat and then out to whatever you are trying to change out. It’s a bit of an involved install, but let’s you retain the factory head unit and add external amp/subwoofer. The issue is that to keep the head unit, it is wired/integrated with the JBL amp…annoying proprietary system, and pretty pathetic that it’s advertised as a premium sound system. It’s muddy and distorts with any volume, and terrible JBL would put their name on it; JBL actually makes quality sound components in the aftermarket. The Mark Levinson system in Lexus line is what Toyota should have used in the upgraded factory systems for what they charge.

What's the verdict on the Tech12Volt replacement sub? My stock sub blew last night and I need to order a replacement. Thanks!

While it could use more power, it still makes a difference. I am happy with the new sub and may get the 8 channel amp that he sells for $589 sometime in the future.

So more cost effective, and better performance, to replace my blown factory JBL sub with the Tech12Volt sub/box, instead of ordering a replacement OEM JBL sub for $500+?

100% without a doubt replace the factory sub with the JBL Club 10 from Tech12Volts. Don't waste your money on another factory sub.
I know the amp linked below is out of stock, but I would message or call him and ask when he plans to get more in. You can get the sub at a reduced price of you order both together. Worst case, buy the sub linked below and ad the amp later.
To date, I have bought the sub, and not the amp and am happy for now.

Would you consider another group buy for this setup?

Thank you for the feedback. One quick question that I'm not sure if anyone on here has come across or not.

My subwoofer part number is 86150-0C020 which is the box/sub for my 2008 Crewmax Limited. Another Tundras.com member is selling the OEM JBL subwoofer and box that he took out of his 2020 Platinum Crewmax for like $50. It's part number is 86150-0C040.

I was thinking that I could have him remove his sub from his box, and just buy the sub and install it into my box in my truck. Only question would be is if the mounting holes are the same pattern and if impedence is the same. This is an even cheapers option than James' $260 JBL.

Has anyone done this to repair their sub? Thanks.

You wont be happy! There are guys on here that have swapped out the factory sub with a different sub in the same crappy plastic enclosure. They eventually trashed that set up and bout the tech 12 volts sub/box. If money is tight, save for a while and buy once so you don't waste more money on something you wont be happy with.

Honestly, I'm going to trade the truck next year for a 2023 Platinum and I want to get the sub operable for the next 9-12 months without spending a bunch of money that will be lost upon trade. For $65, I'm going to roll the dice and see if I can get his OEM replacement to work in my box. If not, then I'll buy Tech12Volt's replacement. Thanks for all the help guys!!!

This is the one I have and it works well. It could use more power but you can always add an amp later.

Quick update...I bought the other member's OEM JBL sub (only the speaker) from his 2020 Tundra, and it was a direct replacement for my '08 Limited...perfect fit into the OEM sub enclosure and wiring harness I'm back up and running for only $65, and still plan on trading the truck for a 2023 Platinum next year. Thanks for the help, guys!
