I know I'm an odd duck with my 4.7 and 9.5 rear. I was wondering if anyone had any insight in the limits of the 9.5 tundra rears strength. I found a 10.5 semi local for cheapish 175$. Was curious if swapping the diff and losing a slight amount of ground clearance would be worth the swap. My main concern is me re gearing and locking the 9.5 only to realize it will break under 37s or 40s. I have not seen any threads covering this topic and was curious if anyone has been there and found the limit in the 9.5 already. Or is the front dif going to give out before I ever get around to breaking the rear 9.5. Any info is welcome. Pic of truck just for fun lol

Sweet RCSB, as for the topic. Great question. I hope someone will come in with some knowledge.

So I don’t have massive amounts of experience with them, the 9.5 is in the land cruisers and they tend to hold fine with big tires and gears and lockers.... I’d check which axle has more aftermarket support.

Toyota 8 inch in the mini trucks from the 80s and 90s tend to hold fine with gears an lockers and big tires pretty well

Aftermarket wise, the 9.5 and 10.5 are very similar. 488s and arb being the few options. The 9.5 is slightly different from previous land cruiser diffs since the pinion has a different spline count so not much is transferrable. Except for the 200 series I believe.

Most toyota 8 inch see power through a 4 banger 22re but I was just curious if anyone had ever broken a shaft or anything in the 9.5 lol not much info on the limits of tundras hardware. Atleast I havent found it yet

A friend of mine shelled his 9.5 with 37s, can’t remember if he was locked or not. He swapped the axle for a 10.5 and hasn’t had any issues since.

What part of the axle did he break also did he have the 4.6 or 4.7. Break it offroading? Was it re geared?

Stock gears, 4.7 and I can’t remember what he broke but he was off-roading.
