Recently my AC went out on my 2010 5.7 tundra at 120k miles. When I took a look around the engine bay I noticed that AC compressor and a large area around the driver side front engine was caked in a black residue. I wiped it with a rag it appeared to be a black powdery residue mixed with some type of oil. I then noticed the ac pulley was not turning while the engine was running. I believe the black residue was from the belt wearing since the pully wasn't turning. The electrical connection for the mag clutch was covered in oil so I cleaned it out with crc electronics cleaner and the pulley is now spinning again. My AC system is completely empty of Freon. Is it possible that the compressor seal went bad and all the freon and oil leaked out covering the compress and front of the engine or is it more likely the leak is coming from some where else? The oil goes up toward the valve cover and around the drive side but it seems the area of the compressor is ground zero.

You lost all the Refrigerant if guage is showing no pressure. My compressor locked up just out of factory warranty period. Didnt lose the refrigerant though. Its a fairly complex job repairing the a/c system. Id recommend replacing the condensor coil and evap core and thorougly flushing all the lines before recharging. Some times failed compressors send metal debri through the entire sytem.
