Hi everyone, I got my first truck last week and decided to go with a 2015 Tundra 4.6 v8 SR5. Very nice truck. The issue I am running into is that my AC will short cycle when I am stopped at the light or idling. The compressor will kick in for 5 seconds then shut off for 15 seconds. I can see the RPM going up and down and hear the engine revving. The air is blowing cold just fine. I took it to a mechanic that said that I had too much Freon in the system, he removed it and added the amount recommended by Toyota. That didn’t work. He also put dies to find leaks and didn’t find any.

This is happening with the blower on the lower or medium speed setting. When the blower is on high speed the compressor stays ON.

When I turn the AC off or turn the blower off the issue goes away.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

If you turn off the AC through the button then of course it goes away. That AC button controls your compressor. And if you turn the blower off, you turning off everything. To me it sounds fine. It doesn’t happen when the blower is on high because it’s pulling the cold air off the evaporator so the compressor stays on to keep it cold.

Thanks for the the reply. My main concern is that the compressor coming on and off every few seconds will damage the compressor on the long run. Like I can count my compressor cycling 3 - 4 times when I’m stopped at the light. The RPM will fluctuate and car will be revving a little. And it happens on every light, every day. Even if I am blowing hot air. It seems to be not normal. Thanks again.

5 secs on is a rather short cycle, IME that means low on freon, but I'd check for myself. Mine cycles about 20 secs On and 20 Off. Does it have a sight glass? What is ambient temp compared to inside cabin temp when this is going on? What vent temps are you seeing?
