I was wondering while using this, do your brake lights come on when it decels rapidly. Today on the freeway it seemed that vehicles were coming up quickly on me when my vehicle would apply the brakes in cruise control.

Yes if brakes are used to decelerate brake lights are illuminated

    Thank you for this.

It's probably in the owners manual too?

I hate that with every slight downhill. Wish it just downshifted like my Tacoma did.

Just an FYI. I was using adaptive cruise going down a long winding pass in the Colorado Rockies when I got stuck behind a slower moving truck. Every time we rounded a sharp corner, the adaptive cruise would lose contact with the truck in front of me and try to accelerate to the set speed. When the road straighten out, it would sense the slower truck and apply the brakes far more aggressively than I would. I foolishly didn't turn the cruise off and let it do its thing. Towards the bottom of the pass, the brakes had heated to the point they were shuttering the whole truck. Fortunately, the shuttering stopped when the brakes cooled down. I've avoided using the adaptive cruise in similar situations since and haven't had any other braking issues.

As much as adaptive is constantly braking, and harder than I would manually, I’m confident it’s using a lot of brake life. I use the old school Contant Speed version more often now

I've grown to like the adaptive cruise but it could be a little softer on the decel and accel. I feel it runs up to its set distance then abruptly slows down to match speed. I think it could start slowing a little sooner.

Agree. If I leave the distance setting to Max, 3 bars, the braking is softer. Wish there was a user setting for the Acceleration too so it’s not racing back up to speed.

My 1st gen Tundra would accelerate like crazy when using cruise control if it encountered a moderate hill and slowed down 1-2MPH. It would literally floor the accelerator and down shift 2 gears raising the RPM to 4500 or more to get back up to speed. It made cruise control unusable in hilly conditions. What's odd is that without cruise control I could easily keep my speed up by just pressing the accelerator a little more and not causing any downshifting.

My 3rd gen Tundra cruise control is SO MUCH better. I can't believe people are complaining about it.

lol, I remember that with the older ones, like riding a wild horse, like whoa there as you start up a slight up hill climb

but ya, my last several have been fine, this one works great, if I had to nitpick at all, it would be for them to utilized a touch more deceleration rather than brake, but Im fine with it, I really like the radar cruise and steering on open interstates

When using Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) in "ECO" mode, I've noticed the acceleration and braking become much smoother. It feels similar to my own braking and acceleration style.

    That's good to know.

I live in the desert, so I don't have to deal with any hills on the freeways but the smoother the better.

Definitely going to try eco mode while in ACC, hopefully that smooths out the approach to slower moving vehicles….
    Thanks @Panic_Zeroize

Too much brake and gas. It’s a lousy implementation. I use constant.

YMMV but I find it best to disengage cruise control when descending from mountain passes. Select a gear that's high enough that you only need occasional brake touches to stay at a safe speed, and not so low that you can't at least keep the speed limit or flow of traffic. IMO, adaptive cruise control at heart is lazy, and at times, unsafe - just as you described.

How do you set for constant?
I read that holding the toggle button in would set the system to old fashion constant, my trk didn’t get the memo.

You should just hold the Cruise Control button down for 3 seconds and the mode will change on your dash to “Constant Speed” or something like that. Then you set the speed just like you would in adaptive.

In this truck I prefer the old school mode mostly. The adaptive is good out on the open road. I have sections in towns where the cops hang out and I always hit cruise in those sections.

Press the cruse button once, twice, and on the third time hold for 3 seconds. You'll see constant cruise pop up between the tach and speedo on the instrument cluster where the adaptive cruise lines usually are. To go back to active turn cruise off and back on. It goes back to adaptive as a default when you turn the truck off.

    Very good info, thanks much.
I’ll try it tomorrow - I was only pushing the button once.

^^^ EXACTLY what I do. Usually gear 5 or 6 work best keeping my truck around 55 mph on the steep downgrades here.

Just hold it down for two seconds. It might just be 1.5 seconds.. it's not a SNES controller.

I could not get what @BoulderGT3 described to work. Maybe it’s 2 seconds, maybe its 3, but the hold down method is the only one I can get to work.
