I am purchasing a 2021 Tundra Limited Cremax with TRD. I am planning to haul a 2 horse trailer with up to 2 horses in the mountains of Colorado. Will I need a suspension upgrade from the stock suspension set up that comes with the vehicle? And if so, what specifically is recommended? I am new to this and don’t know anything! Thanks!

What is the weight of the trailer and horses? Do you know the tongue weight once loaded? Having that info will help us know how hard of a pull you will have. I have a 2016 TRD Crewmax, probably similar setup to yours and the tongue weight/payload is what you need to pay attention to when towing with a 1/2 ton pickup. Check the sticker on your driver door jam to see what your payload is and report back with your trailer and horse weights.

You may want to add a trans cooler, the 2021s do not have them. Plenty of info on this site about the transmission temp issues on the newer Tundras. Heavy weight and mountain grades are going to spike trans temps. Use tow haul and manually selecting gears vs leaving it in drive for best performance and less stress on the truck. You will probably be in S4 or S3 and spinning the engine 2500-3500 RPMs on inclines- no problem, the engine needs to spin up to make power.

Generally speaking, you should not need any suspension mods. Tundras tow well for a 1/2 ton. But you need to know your weights and numbers to see where you are and if there are things like airbags or such that could be helpful.

One other addition if you tow a lot would be to add the rear TRD swaybar. Again- lots of info on adding them here on this site.

Pulled an old pony on a steel trailer from OK to CO with no issues.

I run a 2 horse trailer with tack room and truck pulls well on 37” tires without gears. I have rear helper air bags (Firestone) as well.

I do not have the truck yet but specs are this: max payload 1520; max tow capacity 8800 (dont know why its lower in the Limited than the SR5, which is 9800).
2 horse bumper pull trailer weighs about 3,000 lbs.
2 horses weight about 2,000 lbs (about 1,000 each)
Tack and supplies maybe max of 500 (including hay bale and saddles)

So maybe towing about 5,000 to 6,000 with loaded trailer.

And it says it has Trailer Sway Control that comes with tow/haul package. Would I need the TRD sway bar too?

    Thanks!!

Your Tundra will pull that with no issue. You should not need anything additional but the TRD sway bar does help with on road handling, but it is not needed. Remember you need to break the truck in before you do towing- I think they recommend 500 miles before towing. I just pulled about 1/2 that weight, 3000lbs, over the mountains this past weekend and got 15MPG doing it.
