Hey everyone, I have tossed around the idea of adding an aftermarket cold air intake. I have heard mixed reviews for the first gen Tundras. Some people have said it actually is worse and went back to oem. Wondered if anyone has any experience with this. I have a banks power exhaust and I love it! A few people told me for best results add more air in to counter the more air out. Makes some sense I guess.

I would buy better injectors before an intake.

Check out dirty deeds industries, site vendor. Keith will get you in the right direction.

I'm not a big beleiver in cold air intakes. I just don't see the value. If I was going to do anything I'd try this throttle body spacer and new fuel injectors as stated above.

This guy on Instagram said he was hapoy with this spacer.

I had an intake kit on my 4.6 tundra. They only add power at full throttle. Nothing in normal driving.
I did not buy one for my 5.7. First I’ll try just the trd air accelerator

Don't do it. Your stock one already pulls cold air, the only true aftermarket cold air intake is the Volant and it's just like a stock box with a cone filter and no sound suppression. The people who say you'll get more air in don't understand how motors work.

And if you have larger than stock tires. 4.88 gears are the biggest “felt power” to $ ratio in the world.

Toyota has a very nice intake stock. Huge box, huge filter, smooth tube.

The stock box is, as stated above, a cold air intake.

It does have an opening from the fender that is slightly too small.

Cold air intakes at least get rid of this too small of opening. However they also mechanically recalibrate the mass air meter by reshaping the tube where the mass air bolts to.

This recalibration directly affects how the truck shifts. And usually in a negative way.

To optimize a mostly stock set up do:

    Stock air box mod
    Throttle body coolant bypass
    DirtyDeeds Iniectors
Exhaust but keep stock diameters (3” tAilpipe is way too big!!)

Thanks for the input! I have been looking at your injectors. How do they affect mpg?

Toyota has a really good stock intake design on both the Tacoma and Tundra. If anything, just swap the filter with a K&N or TRD.

I have a K&N filter in it. It seemed to help a bit. Definitely better than oem or wix.

I had a K/N cai on my 2010 it was vary loud inside the cab especially while pulling a trailer when I say loud I mean obnoxious as for myself I wouldn’t go that route again.

I plan on getting the TRD filter just to "keep it in the family". I've never had any issues with those types of filters. My truck came with an aFe CAI and I replaced it with a stock on asap. Glad I did.

K&N are shitty at filtering. OEM paper filter is the best for filtering.

Agreed, K&N is one of the worse at filtration. I would go with AFE, Donaldson, S&B, or AEM any day of the week.

I have K&N kit, part #63-1058#, and I run the OEM setup instead.

I have the airbox from a Volant kit and made a bastard hybrid using that box with the K&N kit, I ran it for a month and went back to stock.

I also have the airaid kit that just replaces the stock tube and keeps the OEM airbox, but i run the stock setup instead.

I have a K&N replacement filter for the stock airbox and it sits on a shelf. I am running an Airaid replacement dry "synthetic" filter but it may also be on the shelf soon.

The opinions preferring the OEM setup are not all from people who don't have an aftermarket kit. A lot of us know from experience and I've tried it all.

First gen in particular, Keith is correct that there is a slight restriction at high RPM only. A really good experiment was done in 2009 that proved it, the solve is to open a 1.25" hole in the stock airbox below the filter to relieve the mild restriction. The difference is negligible and only present at high RPM.

With the listed above upgrades you recommend, what kind of power increase is expected? Seems like a fairly affordable setup.

Does the sabm change the sound of the intake? Like a CAI does?
I like the sound of aftermarket CAI’s but think they’re a waste of money.

I say do what you want.

I've had an AFE CAI and Flowmaster exhaust on my truck for 3 years. It's louder, probably gets worse MPG, who knows if I got more HP. I also have a 6 inch lift, steel bumpers for looks but they are heavier...both also probably contribute to horrific MPG and more wear and tear on parts since I drive dirt roads daily. Did I mention the winch I've only used twice?

All that to say....lots of opinions out there, go for what you want.

Keith, @dirtydeeds I know this is old post but are these the same mods you recommend for a 2019 Tundra? And what air box mod are you referring to...G-Tek? Are there upgraded injectors for a 2019? The 8” BA is on my must do list.
