I want to be thankful for the notice, and I’ve no doubt Toyota will eventually take care of it.

But it’s early August. Am I reading right that there won’t even be a temporary fix till October?

What about till then? Maybe these trucks aren’t old enough for the plastic line to have worn enough to start leaking? We’re good till they can address it?

Forgive me for sounding paranoid. I’ve already put 31k miles on this thing and drive it daily and plan to take it into the mountains over Labor Day.

    Agreed.

But I do think it was poorly thought out by Toyota’s communications team to basically say, “You know, all your trucks could catch fire. We’ll get back with you by Halloween.”

Kind of like those cheery drug commercials telling you that if you use our product "certain cancers and unexpected deaths have occurred".

It's a liability play. Now you have been warned so if something happens they have a case to wiggle out. The same thing is going on with Polaris SxSs. They tell you to park them for the summer- yeah right.

After thinking about this, I laughed when I thought of this recall against the context of other issues...
    • Engine Failures: Dozens of posts across social media about engine failures and it's a hot button issue within the enthusiast community. No recall or acknowledgement from Toyota.
    • Fire Risk: Not a single post of a Tundra on fire or anyone screaming, "My Tundra CAUGHT FIRE!!!" Immediate recall from Toyota about an issue no one knew existed.

Hopefully this won't take as long to resolve as the flying tonneau covers. That recall is going on 6 months now with no resolution in sight, nor even an official report of what the exact problem is. LOL.

It's because there are multiple parts that won't fit between the two separate iterations and some functional changes as well. Especially because all the aftermarket products from 2014 on were originally called 3rd Gen. It wasn't until the new version came out and Toyota clearly stated that this was the 3rd gen that any of that changed. The 2.5 gen trucks are separated from the 2nd gen because there are multiple parts that aren't interchangeable. Different dashes, headlights, taillights, multiple body panels, seats, dashes, the addition of TSS, 38 Gallon tank option, changes to transmission cooling, etc. are enough that the 2014-2021 need to be able to be easily differentiated in aftermarket sections and in issues that may or may not arise from the different components.

TLDR: 2.5 gen folks don't call their trucks that to sound important, differences in the trucks cause the market to refer to them that way. You not knowing the difference doesn't invalidate the difference.

Totally agreed. A few years ago, everyone around here called the 2014+ the 3rd gen. I could not for the life of me figure out why. I guess people who had the post-facelift 2nd gen wanted to distance themselves from the lowly early 2nd genners?

I posted many times that the Toyota XK50 platform remained unchanged except for some styling and minor updates from 2007-2021. Same frame, drivetrain, etc. Actually fewer drivetrain options. A facelift does not a new generation make.

There was a big thread about it with lots of different perspectives. I posted a video of the 2022 where Toyota actually calls it the “all new third generation Tundra”. Then the forum changed the name for the later 2nd gens from 3rd gen to 2.5 gen. I still think it’s goofy but I guess it helps a little bit. It’s still the same thing underneath. :notsure:

    Agreed.

That being said, I will say the ".5" generation label is more common to the Tundra vs other Toyo models. I really wish they had applied that logic to the 4Runner. As a 2012 4Runner owner, I would get so frustrated when talking to aftermarket companies and they would just label their product as "Compatible with 5th Gen 4Runners" but then come to find out it wouldn't work on the 2010-2013 because of the differences.

I put lots of 2013+ parts on my 2012 4Runner, including rocker panels. I just think simply listing the compatible years makes more sense than the .5 generation thing. A generation is not defined by all parts being interchangeable for a set number of years. It’s about the platform that underpins the model.

Right, nobody said it's different as far as the powertrain/frame. The biggest thing is the convenience of the aftermarket items that won't work on 2007-2013 trucks. Same type of thing for the marketplace tabs in the forum. If I have a 2019 truck I don't want to have to filter through everything the 2nd gen had, just the stuff the latter half of the 2nd gen had.

I wasn't compensating for anything, I freakin love my truck. And frankly, I think the new generation of Tundras are equally cool, but I just enjoy the one that I already own. I was just going off what category my model year my truck falls under given the different sections of this very forum. I mean, there's the age old joke that driving a lifted truck is already the compensation for other stuff...lol. My wife loves to throw that one at me from time to time:anonymous:

What's more likely: that someone dealing with feelings of inadequacy buys a giant truck to broadcast it to the world, which is the last thing in the world they would want to signal to everyone -OR- the person who points at them and says "must be compensating for something lol" is actually dealing with it themselves and projecting their own issues onto the person they're pointing at? o_O

Does anyone have a photo of the offending tube? Just wondering if it could maybe benefit from a wrap of insulated aluminum tape while we wait for the remedy. Also curious where physically this is located and whether or not my cat shield will need to come off for access.
