I’m likely going to need a new battery soon. Starting up this morning was a little rough and I know my battery is dying. I searched the forum but could only find threads about which brand battery, stock group size, etc.

My question is: has anyone attempted or installed a different group size into the stock battery tray? I currently have the 24F, but I think I could fit a larger capacity battery into this space with very little modification (if any)

For instance, the H8/group size 49 is quite a bit longer than the 24F, but it looks like it might fit into the stock space. It has 200 more CCAs and 1/3 more reserve capacity for the same price.

The H7/94R is about 2” longer than the 24F and is about 150 more CCAs and a higher reserve rating. Again, same price.

Sorry if this is a stupid question or it’s been covered somewhere else in the forum. I used to have an old wrangler and put in a larger battery... the battery I ended up with was a snug fit in the stock tray but it did fit. The only modification was to rebuild new battery cables. When I started adding lights and a winch, I was very happy I did it. Thanks in advance for any input or advice.

Welcome from the Texas Hill Country.

For starters, you are one group undersized with your 24F already. The stock size for Gen3 is Group 27F, with the "F" indicating the terminals are reversed from usual. I believe some owners have squeezed in the next group size up, or 31F. Do the search on "Group 31 battery", and do a little reading.

The "go-to" battery for many owners has been the Northstar NSB-AGM27F (or X2 equivalent) with 930 CCA. Northstar batteries are hard to find now because they've been bought-out by EnerSys (Exide, Odyessy, others). EnerSys is apparently going to continue selling the Northstar batteries under the Odyessy brand as the Northstar Pro.

If you can't find a Northstar now through Northstar dealers, you'll probably be able to buy one through an Odyessy dealer soon. Just noticed the Northstar Pro NSB-AGM31 has an eye-popping 1150 CCA, but you'll need an "F" version (not listed) to fit the Tundra's reversed terminals.

For what it's worth, I ordered a duo of Northstar's through GP Car Audio in early January (27F main and 31 as secondary); they explained that Northstar's production is all out of whack, and stocking orders from Q3 last year are just now being fulfilled. They are just a few miles from the plant that manufactures the Northstar batteries and ship same day as they are produced. Long-ish story short, the 31 shipped at the end of January, the 27F was due to be back in stock around the middle of this month.

The 31 is in a box in my garage still, I should go check if it is the "new" 31 Pro....
