I have some growth on my roof. I assume it is because some areas do not get a lot of sun. When I had the new roof installed years ago, I had the put aluminum strips it to prevent this growth. It helps marginally. Is there anything I can spray to remove the growth without harming the shingles?

    Lots of stuff!
Get some "30 Second Roof" and spray it on the whole roof and let it dry. The moss will go away over time. You can also replace your 'aluminum" strips with zinc strips as they will help keep the growth down. Avoid walking on any of the ridge caps as they can crack.

I may have mispoken. They may be zinc. I wanted copper. But the roofer at the time said they would stain the roof.

I have similar growth on my roof. Just enough to make it look a little ugly. It’s a tall house with a steep roof, and I’m not too wild about dancing around up there.

So, I have a soft-wash outfit coming on Monday to deal with it. They’ll spray it down with something bleachy that will kill the moss. It’ll supposedly start falling off over the next several weeks and leave the roof looking great again. Hoping it works well!

What does it do? Protect the shingles? I'll do a Google search and see who sells it. I assume it does NOT remove growth.

This stuff looks good. Although reviews vary. Home Depot reviews are not that good. Amazon reviews are a bit better.

BTW: Reading the reviews does show some reviewer flaws. My assumption was that this kills over time. Some of the reviewers sprayed it and assumed it would instantly clean the roof. To make an analogy, that would be like buying Scotts and expecting the weeds to instantly vanish.

Remember, you’ll be a little limited by the time it takes for the cleaners to work.

If you need to see instant results, you’ll need to physically remove the growth. Most common method at this point t is pressure washing, but this is very hard on the roof. Yes, the moss will be gone, but so will a ton of the granules from your shingles. Your gutters will be full of all this. Do not recommend.

Living in the northwest this post is almost like a comedy skit. Everyone’s roof here has moss on it and it’s just a question of tactics to remove.

Soft washing companies are the most effective and most costly option. Pressure washing is semi effective but destroys the roof, when I see someone doing that I know they aren’t from here and likely won’t live in that house long before a roof replacement.

30 seconds is by far the most common diy method for moss on roofs and driveways etc. I buy some yearly. There is a version of 30 seconds that is spray and walk away in a hose bottle you can just stand on a ladder on the edge of the roof and spray most of the roof.

Putting zinc strips at the top of the roof works as well but isn’t 100% effective and can look a little weird. Some people put various powders on the roof every spring which is similar to 30 seconds in effect.

The long term pro move is advanced shingles with zinc/copper/etc in them and or using a standing seam roof which won’t allow moss to grow.

    Thanks!
I had one of those "soft shampoo" or roof washes before I replaced the roof. They do remove moss and fungus, but some of the roof too. I guess that is unavoidable. Power washing never seemed like a good idea.

I’ll buy some 30 seconds. Thanks to PBNB and all others who mentioned it. I’ll give it a try. Also, it is not too expensive also, which is great.

I use a product called wet n forget; I typically dilute to a little stronger ratio. Works really well but like other products takes a couple of weeks to take full effect

I live in a log home in the woods and if let go everything turns green. I treat my logs with Borate WP mixed with water and spray the logs and shingles. Borate is pretty benign stuff to humans but to mold, algae and insects it's deadly. Also of use is the commonly available 20 Mule team Borax which does the same thing but I have found its harder to mix with water. Best part is there's no scrubbing. Spray it on and let it dry. Green gone in a few days.
