Any way to disable the automatic e-brake function? - GOD, I hate this truck!

How do I turn off the function where the truck automatically puts on the e-brake when I'm in park?

Just curious, why is this an issue to you?

Does it not automatically come off when you take off?

While in park and your foot on the brake push and hold the parking brake button. Somewhere around 3-5 seconds later you should get the confirmation on the multi-info screen.

Same process to turn it back on when you need it, except you pull on the switch instead of pushing.

What's next? My truck starts sleeping with my wife?
If I need the parking brake on, then I'll put it on. The amount of control these new vehicles have over basic functions is troubling and annoying.

A month ago when putting boat in and out of the water on the launch, noticed that once I put truck in park on the launch and took foot off brake, there was no play/clunk like any other truck I’ve ever used. Assumed that was this auto brake coming into play. I liked it, for on the boat launch at least.

I could see the auto park brake being a nuisance for those of us that live in a frozen climate half the year. Things like that tend to freeze in sub zero temps, especially after a car wash

Does the disable trick work indefinitely or only until the engine is turned off? I also do not want park brake every time.

No problem glad I could help!
Works indefinitely or until you reverse the process to turn it back on.

I'm not going to park in the garage no more just in case!

I prefer manual everything. I hate the interior lights staying on for a while after you close the door or turn on automatically when you shut the car off ... what if I'm dealing drugs or something :D
Need to get the software on my laptop and disable all these auto-crap features.

Auto e-brake can come in handy like @t300 said about boat ramps ... but during hard winter can cause issues like @49°NRTH was saying.

If I want my e-brake on, I always go to N, apply e-brake, make sure the car is not moving, then shift into P.
I never let the P holding the car from moving. e-brake first, then P.

You can change the interior light delay and I believe turn it off completely yourself in settings on the multi media screen. See owners manual page 575.

I'm just going to say I am not to sure about these issues in cold weather. Lived in Minnesota the past 20 years I have seen plenty of manual vehicles that need to use the parking brake all the time , plenty of electronic parking brakes and none got froze up by winter down to -40f. The reason parking brakes do fail up here is the ones that are never used rust and the cable snaps.

As a Mainer, I have seen regularly used cabled parking brakes seize after driving in slush and the temp drops after parking. I can't say anything on electronic ones though

You make a good point. I have lived in the rust belt my entire life and most emergency brakes cables seize if you keep the vehicle long enough. They have always seized from rust corrosion from road salt and moisture. I also never used them so I wonder if regular use would keep them working longer.

Worked like a charm. Didn’t know this was even happening, but must have been that loud mechanical noise I would here when shifting to and from park.

I believe this new electronic parking brake is motorized within the rear calipers with no cables, correct? To each his own of course but I kinda like the idea of it getting cycled vs. sitting stationary for a few years between - if that could even be an issue with this setup. Or maybe manually cycling it on a personal service schedule like every oil change for those that disable it?

Good to know when servicing the rear brakes so it doesn’t apply when off the rotors

There may be a special procedure however to retract the pistons when replacing pads. Not sure on the new Tundra but that's my understanding on some other vehicles with the motorized in-caliper e-brake.

All this talk of seizing, do we even know where the e brake is located and how it works? Is this even really a concern here vs some folks who don’t like the noise?

    Haven't heard of any failures.
My grandpa used to reef on the manual parking brake back in the day when on level ground. For years we laughed but it always worked. One day he came in with a parking brake. The cable snapped and broke the plastic. Will this one fail eventually? Who knows. But I also know when I do and don't need a parking brake so why add mechanical complexity to daily driving?

Any way to disable auto e-brake function which comes on when door is open and car is not in park? The new safety features are extremely annoying and I wish I never traded in my 2017 tundra which did not ask me if I needed a break and did not disable the display screen if I had a blocked sensor and did not automatically put the emergence brake on when I wanted it off. This past winter I wanted to put the truck in neutral and then tow it a few feet out of a snow bank. This was not possible because the emergency brake would automatically come on if tried to get out of the car without it being in park. Also the truck is used extensively on our property and sometimes it is helpful to open the door while backing up a trailer to get a better view but this is not possible. Appreciate if anyone knows how to disable this. In my opinion Toyota has engineered this new version of the tundra into one of the most frustrating vehicles I have owned. I could go on with a laundry list of other non-intuitive, non-ergonomic, engineering "advancements" that have been dropped into the new Tundra's but I'll restrain.

It’s a regulation and safety. Can’t be disabled. Someone would be in here complaining they got runover and that they would sue Toyota after disabling the safety feature.

Greatest thing ever. After push button start and proximity key that is.

And for reliability, old parking brake releases were often a pull and a metal rope that could break at very inconvenient times.

And when not used regularly they would rust in place requiring a difficult repair.
