Anybody know the 2018+ CAN Bus/Network Gateway system really well?

Looking for help understanding the network gateway in the CAN bus in the 2018+ trucks.

Long story short I am playing with Instrument Cluster Swaps. The 2014-2017 Trucks have one single CAN bus to get data from ECUs to give the instrument cluster.

The 2018+ Trucks added a network gateway and split the single Can Bus circuits into 4-5 individual Can Bus circuits that all feed into the Network Gateway.

I tried putting a 2018 Cluster on a 2014-2017 single CAN Bus system with no gateway, and the Cluster is not picking up info from several ECUs.

Wondering if I can wire in a 2018+ Network Gateway. Feed the 2014-2017 Signal Can Bus into all ports of the 2018 Gateway and then somehow the Gateway read/filters the CAN in a way the 2018 Cluster will see data from the 2014-2017 ECUs.

You will need to search for it, but I recall a thread here in the last 2 weeks or so about someone successfully installing a 3rd gen cluster into a 2nd gen. I would guess they posted it in the general or 2nd gen forum areas.

There was someone on here that had wiring diagrams. It’s been a while so I don’t remember the post or who it was. Hopefully they’ll see this or try searching for wiring diagrams. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Yea I was going to say that is probably my thread.

I have since bought a 2018 cluster as I like the way it looks better plus it has a digital speedo.

Unfortunately I ran into an issue with the newer CAN bus. I bought a 2018+ Network gateway earlier today but won’t be here until next week.

Just trying to get a better idea of how the system operates and what could or could not work

Thanks for the post. I have extensively downloaded wiring diagrams and info from the repair manual from TIS. It’s still kinda generic in terms of what I asking/ trying to solve

All the EWDs from TIS are in the wiring diagram thread in my signature, but sounds like you’ve got those already.

Next step is probably to start pulling down troubleshooting/repair procedures for each of the different systems that hit that new device. I’m being TMC doesn’t have the internals published where normal repair techs are going to have access, but a guy might be able to reconstruct the basics from working through the different troubleshooting. Sounds like a hell of a project!

If I could find diagrams of the internal circuits in the modules that would be huge. You really think the Service Techs at the dealer have access to these?

No, I was meaning I doubt they do. Most of the diagnostics stuff I've found will lead you to the module, and if anything it it is failing, then they just replace the module. a guy might be able to recreate the internal circuits by studying the troubleshooting info, but it's also getting to where these modules aren't just switches and relays any more too.
