Had a 2016 Crewmax that I got in a 65ish mph crash in over the weekend. Thought it weird at the time nothing deployed but forgot about it with the obvious “oh fuck” of everything going on. Insurance adjuster called today to let me know repair estimate was 23k and they were writing it off as totaled. But he also brought it up that it was odd non of them deployed. Currently truck shopping again but the safety features have been on my mind while looking
More important side note all parties involved and are ok and unharmed.

Also think the the writing it off was from the fames issues. I noticed almost immediately when I had to kick the driver door open of a passenger side hit that something had to be up.

Vehicles have specialized sensors to tell the truck when to deploy airbags. Airbags can do a lot of harm when deployed and I’m sure they don’t want them going off in a situation when they are not needed. They also result in loss of control as they obstruct view and disorient the driver. Seeing the location of the damage my guess is the truck thought they were t necessary to deploy in this instance. Glad you’re ok

Sounds like the truck did its job, since you're able to be alive and tell us about it. Glad that everything worked out for you, best of luck in vehicle shopping.

My assumption would be that the passenger airbags should have deployed if there were a passenger. Maybe not on a glancing blow.

    Glad everyone is ok.

I rear-ended a vehicle about 10 years ago in my Ridgeline. The hood was folded up to the windshield. Radiator and fan were pancaked into the engine. Not a single airbag deployed and I was also not injured at all. It went to a Honda dealer body shop, they checked all of the sensors and SRS system, no issues.

Hit a deer at 55/60 totaled my Tacoma. No air bags deployed if they did I would have wrecked after the deer hit.

Yep; hit a mailbox and then a concrete culvert at about 40 mph 20 years ago; not one airbag deployed. I was told it was due to the speed/angle I hit at.

almost_workshop that truck did exactly what it was designed to do.

One of the main ingredients for SRS/AirBag deployment is Sudden Deceleration combined with forward occupant motion and the seat belts in play.
Your motion at impact was towards the console and right side windshield pillar, the seat belt in play kept you where they intended you to be.
I'm glad to hear the most important part, everyone in your truck is OK.

May not have gone off if you did not have a passenger? Also the head light area of the front end is the weakest point in that area, thus you may not have had a hard enough direct hit to the front bumper for it to trigger the airbag.

Due to injury rates from airbags, new criteria was established, phase one employed in 2007. There is significant algorithms developed for speed, vector angles, multi-stage airbag deployment, and deceleration. I’ve seen plenty of front end collisions with no deployment. They were iffy prior to 2004. But the injury rate for the new stuff and reliability has been pretty spot on. Most newer ones calculate crash and deploy within 15-30milliseconds.

My Sister got flipped in her Lexus GX a few weeks ago and only the Side Curtains popped but I dont think there was any front collision anyway so maybe they did what was planned?
I was a little surprised really though.
