Just wondering if anyone is experiencing what I have over the last two days. Yesterday, when I dropped the tailgate on my Platinum, instead of the bed step deploying the driver's side running board deployed. I opened and closed the driver's door and tailgate and everything worked as it should. Twice today the driver's side running board has deployed when I opened the door but when I closed the door it retracted and immediately deployed again. A message on the dash said something like - unable to retract step. I tried using the manual button, with the same results. The first time it did it, I opened/closed the door numerous times and drove a little and it finally retracted. The second time, I was at a restaurant and messed with it for a while and gave up, leaving it out. When I finished eating and came out, the plan was to video the issue so that I could show the dealership. You guessed it, retracted just as it should, lol.

Other than take it in for service, any suggestions or similar issues?

** I am well aware of the list of members that hate the 22, no need to chime in. This also applies to those who choose to wait years to buy their trucks. I'd rather enjoy the present, these are just little headaches.**

    Thanks...

I've got a list of about 5-6 things waiting on warranty repair, first world problems - absolutely love this truck. And I feel this way after it spent 5 weeks in the shop.....don't sweat the small stuff!

I haven’t had any issues with mine yet but I believe there’s a bump sensor that detects when it deploys and hits something- I wonder if it has something to do with it. Please keep us posted as to what the issue was when they find out.

I wish I had one. It seems I am being ignored by Toyota. Seeing how this is a new model and I have a list of issues, the service manager told me to communicate directly with him. I have sent him a video of the running board problem while it was happening and heard nothing. I have left voice mails with no return calls. I will be reaching out to Toyota 800# and seeing if I can get a case manager assigned again next week.

Like I've said in several other posts, the minor problems don't affect my overall opinion nearly as much as the response to the issues.

Well, I received a call from the service manager today. Apparently, issues with the running boards is now a "known" issue and he has to open a case with Toyota. Not sure what the "fix" is, as Toyota probably doesn't know either, LOL.

The problems persist, but are quite random. It seems like they function perfect for a couple days and then will malfunction five times in a row and then no more issues for days.

I’m having issues with my power running boards as well. Started today. I’ve also had issues with the parking break not engaging. My truck shutting off on the freeway… I love this truck, but it’s pissing me off right now!

Nope, running boards and step have been working perfectly as does the parking brake.

What do you mean “shutting off on the freeway”? Are you in stop and go traffic or are you barreling down the road at 75 mph when it cuts off?

Please open a separate thread on this forum describing your issues with truck shutting off on the highway, and dealers reply. This is a big issue and if someone else is also having same issue it helps to share the knowledge and ideas...

toyota has their hands full with "known " issues, geez. Also seems like very few TSBs or recalls to fix all this shit so far.

Im having another moment of pause, I thought I was ready to purchase but damn, it seems like it's always something with this truck.

I was really hoping the 2023 and 2nd production run would be cleaner, but it doesnt look like that so far.

as I wait for one of the dealers I'm talking to, here seems to be some of the current list of stuff from this site. I do think we are past the turbo fiasco, but now we are seeing a more transmission failures, Im not putting that on the below known list since its new and only a truck or two (so far)

here seems to be a list of more common issues you read here, it would suck to one or more of these as they dont have fixes as of yet that Im aware of, but people have reported "toyota is aware and working in it"

    wind noise inside cab
    shit weather striping
gas gauge malfunctioning after parking on slight incline
    mirror whistle noise
    mirror caps blowing off
    throttle lag/surge
    bed rattle
door rattle (I will go aftermarket system so I think I can solve this one)
    rattle above headliner
    power running boards malfunctioning
leaking grab handle or leaking sunroof
bed liner pealing off (Im trying to get one without this as I dont want one anyways)
body panels misaligned and paint QC problems

number 1 on the list is wind noise, the platinum I test drove had it, that would absolutely drive me nuts, unacceptable. I think I can head that one off on the test before delivery though, Im hoping toyota fixes this before I get into one though.

I have a Platinum that I bought in March…7500 miles so far. Other than the rear window weatherstripping (corrected by dealer) none of the other items has happened on my truck (I don’t have the bed liner so I can’t address that). There were 74,011 Tundras sold in 2022 and I’d be willing to bet that less than 1% have been affected by the issues you’ve mentioned.

I get it, and I’m glad you got a good one.

im currently betting 70k it’s a lot more than 1% of trucks at the moment, that’s why I’ve held out till now. There is some progress so that’s good

It was about 7-8 months ago when I took it in, I don't recall the actual terms used but I was told by the service manager that some type of error code was found but they could not decipher the meaning or cause.

The problem is very intermittent and definitely not caused by rocks. I have found the only way to actually duplicate it is to let a passenger get out while leaving the truck in drive. Once they shut the door, when I drive off the passenger running board will retract and deploy several times while I'm driving. I have not had the bed step act crazy again, just that one time. As with most the little issues, I've thrown in the towel asking or hoping Toyota will fix them; I just live with it and roll on!

I don't have any raw numbers, but I have used two local Toyota dealerships for service and both of them have told me that almost every Tundra they've sold has been back for one issue or another. Both dealerships had a Tundra completely dismantled chasing leaks, that were eventually bought back as lemons. Of course, not much can be determined from such a small sample, but that does say something for what is being shipped out. I personally think the percentage with issues is much higher.

I understand what you're saying and I agree that some quirks may be encountered when buying a new model year of anything, but my truck has been in the service department a total of 50 days in the first 6 months of ownership. To me, this has grown to the point of unacceptable under any circumstances. As I've indicated in many posts on here, it's not necessarily the problem but how they are handled; Toyota customer service has been terrible in my experience thus far.

Yes, I've had two "case managers" so far. The first took a long time to get any resolution but we finally got that issue resolved, but my real heartburn comes from the second one. By that point I was discussing a lemon law buy back and they offered to provide me with a 100,000 mile extended warranty if we worked through the issues; I agreed. Fast forward a couple weeks, I was notified that my case was being closed because my issues were "known issues without an immediate solution" and there was no point having an open case; I asked to leave it open and they refused. They then told me they would not provide an extended warranty on a vehicle with "open known issues". I let this dust settle a couple months and have tried to call back and act like everything is worked out so I can get the warranty. These reps tell me that the only person who could provide said warranty is the originating case manager. I call a couple times a week and can not get this person on the phone and she clearly refuses to call me back.

I could type a whole page of bad interactions I've had since the purchase of this truck. I would like to consider myself pretty easy going and not sweating the small stuff, but dang, Toyota is one deceitful company! That comment is not based on that one interaction but almost 8 months now of the salesperson saying the service manager said something then the service department denying it, the service manager blaming Toyota, Toyota case manager blaming the sales guy, a new dealership talking trash about the dealership I was using previously. Not a single entity of this company works cohesively to resolve anything, leaving the customer in the middle. I have truly never experienced anything like my Toyota experience.

I understand what your saying but where are you getting your info/ how do you know this? I've been in contact with Amp well before I got my truck, about power running boards and this is what they said. And if they did, I would think they'd have aftermarket ready to go. Anyways, this may be a bump in the road for me as I have all the parts for the steps except wiring. I've got all the plugs and pins, just have to find time to make a harness. The bump being that it has its own ECU (attained) but that it gets data signals and not + or - for triggers. And in the dash, info whether or not they are functioning properly.

Ugh mine just started doing this too. anyone have any updates or know how to fix this? I ran diagnostics and no codes came up related to this.. side step won’t reliably retract, specifically on the passenger side.

I have a ‘23 Platinum. When it was new, it did the “step won’t stay retracted thing” on the driver side about once per week. About a month or more into owning it, I was washing it and deployed the steps so I could clean them as well, and noticed a foam / gel type pad affixed to the internal side of the front hinge arm on the driver’s side. It was about 1/8” thick and the perfect size (about an 1” square) to fit onto the flat recess of the hinge arm. It covered the little hole in the center of the hinge arm (that’s just where it was located, I don’t think covering the hole was its purpose). Looked to me like some packaging protection (maybe applied by the OEM before shipping the step to Toyota?) that was not removed. It was black like the hinge arm, so wasn’t obvious at first. The front hinge on the driver side was the only hinge with a pad affixed to it. I removed it.

I can’t say my issue is 100” gone, but it is 95%+ better. Makes me wonder if not at least some of the same type of issues other folks are having might be related to having debris hung in a hinge.

My running board on drivers side has done that maybe 2 times in a year. There was nothing obstructing it and when I restarted the truck it just went in like normal

I agree, I think people are going out of thier way to bitch about everything under the sun ( not Breathing Borla, he just pointed it out ). If that list of issues was such a major dilemma we would all have 100 recalls on our trucks

I think the builds drastically cleaned up around March/april 2023 from what I can tell reading here and the first year bugs were larger gone, that’s what I was waiting for to purchase and that’s when I saw it clean up and I pulled the trigger and got a solid truck so far

only issue i have is that the passenger auto board extends when the wife gets out, she closes the door and it retracts as i am driving off to go park and then re-deploys with the door shut and then retracts with a thunk about 2 secs later.
