I just got my truck back from the 2nd service and it seems to be running different. I don't drive it much so it took 18 months to get to the first oil change interval. At first I thought maybe there's a break-in map they use to protect the engine a bit until the first oil change. But it seems more comprehensive than that because the shift mapping seems totally different along with the throttle tip-in and some other hard to define stuff.

I can only describe the way it drove previously as "sluggish". Hesitant to respond to the throttle, and like it was not using all of the gears but instead choosing the tallest possible gear and just slipping the torque converter like a CVT. Even the wife, who actually drives a Toyota CVT, commented on the unpleasant droning it would do when she pushed the gas. It also didn't really sail off throttle and there seemed to be a lot more engine braking than I would have expected. My last vehicle was a nine speed and had all sorts of weird and annoying behavior so I figured this is just a modern fuel economy and adaptive tuning thing.

And now suddenly all that stuff seems to have gone away. It drives a lot more predictably and smoothly, like a vehicle with 7 or 8 gears and designed before the "adaptive" powertrain logic. I thought I was imagining it but it's been about a week under different driving conditions and it is definitely improved. My neighbor had a very early one delivered and he traded it in under a year because he said it didn't feel "sporty" enough. I thought that was ridiculous for a fullsize truck but I get what he meant, it feels way more linear and responsive all of a sudden.

Or it's just been a really long year and I'm imagining things.
