My 2019 Tundra does not have Apple CarPlay and I'd like to install it. I have seen an aftermarket kit for $600+ which I felt was too expensive. Any other options out there that are more reasonable?

A couple months ago I paid Crutchfield a little under $700 for an Alpine ILX-407 and all the harnesses and adapters needed to keep my steering wheel buttons working. Best thing I’ve ever done to the truck. Gained car play but am enjoying cleaner sounding music as well.

Thanks Bigdaddyll - was the installation something an amatuer could pull off or would recommend pay a pro? I see Crutchfield is O/S so I've asked them to keep me posted when they come back in. Thanks for the information!

I did the same but I went with a Pioneer. Whole set up ran me $575 from Crutchfield. I am no pro with electronics but Crutchfield made it easy. I had them on the phone too for about an hour while I was doing the install walking me through it step by step. Well worth it

Tommy - thanks for the reply - do you have a model number for that Pioneer?

Rich, I just installed a HU with one of the main objectives being the addition of wireless/wired Apple CarPlay.

I tried to document the entire home garage installation from start to finish.

I spent way more than $600, but the steps and some of the materials will be the same regardless of the HU you choose. I hope it helps. I couldn’t find a solid installation walkthrough, so I tried to create one.

with the harness Crutchfield sent me it was easy. The amount of wires will freak you out at first but really in the truck it’s plug and play. I had it installed in maybe 45 minutes. That is just the work in the truck though. I spent an hour or so the night before soldering the harness to the radio wiring. Ended up being one of the easier installs I’ve done.

I will add that if I had to do it again I would also order a USB port and replace the factory one straight away. I used the adapter to retain the factory one and had nothing but trouble. The factory port isn’t meant for as much data transfer as car play requires so for an extra $20 I would do that from the start.

Crutchfield is very knowledgeable. If you're looking at the ReadyHarness, these guys have one that's wired together for you (it's a bit cheaper). I used it for my Sony and it worked awesome:

I don't think the OEM ports in our Tundras are USB 3.0 - Not great for Carplay/Android Auto :(

Im not disagreeing with you guys about the usb port. Im not a techy guy by any means. I used the factory usb and havent had any issues with car play at all YET. I have used google maps and all other features without any problems.
In the future though if i want to swap out the usb can you advise what i should get???

I ordered this on from Crutchfield. Its dual USB but my radio only has 1 input so the 1 of the ports isnt connected. There are other options on Amazon though for cheaper. The problems I had was connectivity issues from the beginning. It had me thinking cables were bad and everything. Finally it just died completely. Since installing the new one I havent had a single issue.
