    Just a quick question.

Is the image quality, poor at that, a limitation of the camera used or the resolution of the display in our trucks.

I rent a lot of cars for work as a business traveler and the back up image on our trucks are just poor compared to others. Especially at night.

Is there a way to update the rear camera to get a better image or are we just stuck with what we have?

I know that they do put what appears to be a better quality camera on some of their other vehicles. We just purchased a Camry Hybrid and the camera on that one is night & day difference from the Tundra.

Tinted windows, swing cases x2, husky mats, LED bulb swap in and out, TRD shift knob, remote start, bed linex, tube steps, tonneau cover and more to come I’m sure..
I agree about the poor image quality. My 11 lariat had a better camera than my 18 limited. Small price to pay I guess.

Is there a better camera we could buy for a better image?

Clean the lens? Mine is no worse than any other backup camera I've seen TBH. I guess I'd have to see one with an exceptional image to make a comparison tho.

I know my 17 Tacoma has a better camera, this one on the tundra does not adjust to light very well.

@Roman can you verify if the Tacoma and Tundra cameras are different, and if so can the Tacoma camera be installed in the Tundra?

It might not be the camera but the resolution quality of the screen in the Tundras.

I have a Kenwood head unit which last year had the highest resolution screen of any unit at that time. My image quality is still weak on the backup cam. My front cam, aftermarket, is better.

I took my wife’s ‘19 Honda Pilot the other night and was surprised that her back up camera is worse than the Tundra.

    Who knew.

Does anyone know what the resolution is on our head units?

I'm just curious because I've heard a lot of complaints about the backup camera quality...but what yall doing with it? Backing up to the TV and trying to watch a movie or something ?

I mean I use mine like 5 seconds a day.

It is not really a big deal, just like most upgrades to our trucks are not needed. Why not upgrade the camera if it is cheap enough? I have trouble backing into my garage on sunny days because the camera does not adjust well from bright to dark areas.

I purchased an additional back up camera for my 2017 Tacoma TRD/OR. I installed it on a slide-in pop-up camper I use. I go back and forth between the tailgate camera and the camper camera. The new camera is definitely higher resolution and a great improvement over the Toyota camera. I have the factory head unit.

I need to do some research to see what's available for the Tundra. I have yet to put the camper on the Tundra, but I will be and then I'll see if there is an improvement over the stock camera. -kirk out

It’s Atari based resolution, might be 8-bit?

Being that this is the first vehicle I've ever owned that HAD a backup camera, I'm just stoked that it has one. It works perfectly for me, basic info that fils in all of the blanks. Also, priceless for lining up to hitch our stock trailer (unless I forget to raise the tailgate - duh).

    I'm cool with it.

Just foolin. It’s the screen res I would assume. I’ve heard cameras in the 1960s have higher resolution than any screen that has still been invented

Agreed. However my problem is that the center line is slightly off from my hitch ball, which messes with me every time I go to hook up, lol. Is there a way to adjust it somehow?

The camera part numbers are different, but the diagram image of the camera is very similar. It's possible it could work, though I do not know if there would be any mounting/wiring issues that would need to be addressed for the swap.

I am not sure if it could be, the camera is offset in the tailgate latch or not centered. You could install a License plate mounted camera that would be centered. I would think there would be a trade off with the lower viewing perspective.

I remember my 2010 4Runner had the backup camera built right into the rear view mirror. It would pop up in the corner when you put the truck in reverse. I actually didn't mind that.

I agree. My 07's backup camera flat out sucked. The one in my 14 is a huge improvement.
