I have been reading these threads for weeks deciding on a new cover for the Tundra I had ordered, and when it finally arrived I decided to purchase the Bakflip MX4. Installation was fairly easy and the Youtube videos the manufacturer provided were useful. However, it quickly became very clear that the quality processes at Bakflip were lacking entirely.

The left latch/rail that attaches to the side of the truck came bent, and had a piece of rubber seal that was cut too short in the factory, leaving an opening. The cover had an existing scratch on it, despite being packages pretty well. The end caps were also bent out of place. The foam piece that seals above the center bed rail was a very cheap, thin piece of foam that came bent and ripped and looked like it would last a few days. When it rained, the cover leaked in around 6-7 different locations into the bed of the truck.

I called Bakflip, and their customer service representative was not great. He said they would open a claim and that their product is not intended to keep water out. I indicated that I had a similar cover with another brand on my prior truck that never leaked once.

Take 2 - I received my replacement cover yesterday. The rails on the side came bent again despite being packaged very nicely. The rubber seals on them were also cut short and were lacking the needed length. The outside top pieces of the side rail were also deformed and bent upwards creating a big opening. When installed, you could see daylight through numerous spots from inside the bed. The actual length of the cover seemed shorter then the prior one as there were sections by the tailgate that I could see into the back. The icing on the cake was when installation was complete, I went to hook up the drain line and realized they installed two different sized pieces on the cover so the provided attachment was only compatible on one side.

Very disappointing to see this, especially after all the positive comments and beautiful photos I had seen of them installed here! With that said, I was wondering if the other brands (Solid Fold, Toyota OEM), with similar covers are all built by the same company or if perhaps I would have better experiences with them?

I think I have a Truxedo, and knowing me its not a super expensive one because it wouldn't bother me much if it leaked, but its proven to be a leak-proof good cover.

I've been wanting a Bak Revolver X4S ever since I bought my truck, not a fan of the complete lack of security that my Truxedo LoPro soft rollup provides. However, I've been steadily reading review after review that indicates Bak's service and quality has dipped tremendously since, hmmm, 2019, mystery as to why.

I've decided to go with a Truxedo Sentry CT when the time comes. I want something with hard slats and a flush profile that also quickly unlatches from the front of the bed, giving unfettered access if I haul something larger in there. This checks all the boxes and still ranks excellently with quality. I've subsequently removed the X4S from my wishlist.

On this note the "unfortunate" thing is that if the quality is slipping for BAK folks pretty much all of these bed cover companies are owned by the same outfit. RealTruck owns BAK, Extang, Retrax, Roll n Lock, Tonno Pro, Truxedo, Undercover, Gator, Et al. So I kinda figure if one's gonna suffer... That said, manufacturing for each line is scattered all over the place so there may be some separation of build quality. :notsure:

Yeah my 21 f150 bak was great but my 22 tundra one had a lot of aesthetic blemishes

I can't help but suspect some of these manufacturing arms use different amounts of locally-USA sourced assembly of foreign-derived parts, and have variable levels of QA.

Interesting! Is that who makes the oem covers too? I’ve read generally positive things on them.

I believe the OEM covers are also made by the same group. I removed my Undercover Armorflex and replaced it with a Diamondback SE, which I like MUCH better.

Bummer. Mine was fine, QC-wise, but I did waterproof the front end by the cab a little extra with silicone when installing. I just wasn’t confident in the rubber up there (TWSS).
7 months and 16,000 miles with no issues.

Put mine on last week. No issues at all. This is the third one I’ve had and they do all leak some, but I’ve never really needed it to be watertight. I only need it so I can keep things locked up in the bed.

If it makes you feel any better, Bakflip is sending me 3rd one on 1/24. First one was great with minimal leaking in the front corners and the tailgate(knew it would but didn't affect me) but one of the rubber hinges was defective and cut short. They sent me a new lid only... Installed it and this thing leaks quite a bit. Emailed the same thread from the previous warranty claim and some pics of the water in the bed. Now they are sending me a complete kit. Let's see if third time is the charm. Love the functionality of it and know it is not water tight so hopefully this next one will have been built a little better.

It seems there are still quality control issues ... I recently took delivery of the BAKFlip MX4 and, upon unpacking, found that the cab end of both rails were bent; one down and the other up. There was no indication of damage to the packaging. Called BAK and without question they agreed to ship two replacement rails. The BAK agent seemed to not be surprised with the bent rails, as if it's a problem they're aware of.

My Truxedo Sentry CT should be here Monday 11/27/23. Sure hope it comes in decent shape as I have spent way too much time down the rabbit hole on what would be the best bang for the $$$$

That's a way better deal than what I found! Best I found it for was $1049.00 shipped.

To even get a quote, one has to email Shaun there, as their site doesn't advertise the prices outright - but that was also like 6 months ago and might not still be that low anymore!

Finally got the chance to install this Sunday. Install is beyond easy! Quality is top notch. With that said, I have a soon to be son driving in Feb so I normally drive his little car to and from work so the truck sits in the garage. We are taking the kids skiing in January and will be driving the truck Mo so i'll let you know how it does keeping the weather out of the bed from our luggage then lol.

My brand new MX4 was leaking in the middle somewhere. Warranty was an absolute PAIN in the arse to deal with. They send me a lid replacement and just had it installed. Will see how this goes, else I till Feb 1st for a full refund and send it back.

While I'm not trying to defend BAK, no where (that I could find) do they state that the MX4 is waterproof. What they state is, "Rain or shine, the MX4 provides confident cargo storage that’s complete with dual drain tubes to divert water away from the truck bed, as well as full perimeter seals to help protect against water intrusion." I had my own quality issue in that the cab end of the both of the side rails were bent, which BAK quickly replaced without question. Anyway, glad they honored your warranty claim.

I’ve had nothing but great customer service from Bak. I’ve had 4 of their covers, and numerous times needed parts and they’ve sent them free of charge and no questions asked!

Anyone who thinks a Bak MX4 is completely waterproof is living in a fantasy world. They don't state they're waterproof and by simply looking at them it's clear they won't be waterproof.

And as far as securing precious cargo, it'd take someone 30 seconds with a screwdriver to breach your fortress. They'll keep honest people out and prying eyes from seeing what's in your bed but that's about it.

To my knowledge, BAK doesn't state that the MX4 cover is waterproof ... What they say is, "Rain or shine, the MX4 provides confident cargo storage that’s complete with dual drain tubes to divert water away from the truck bed, as well as full perimeter seals to help protect against water intrusion." I installed the MX4 on my Tundra a couple of weeks ago, and I like it, a lot. I didn't bother installing the drain tubes because I don't particularly care if a little water gets into the bed area. If waterproof is what people want, they need to be looking at another product.

Bakflip sucks. Junk product, customer service to match. Somewhere on this forum is my whole story dealing with them on an mx4. Avoid at all costs.

Not based on my experience, both with the product itself that I installed on my Tundra a couple of weeks ago, and Customer Service who quickly resolved an issue I had with the rails that were damaged in transit.

I think flush mount covers are inherently harder to waterproof and after 10 years with one I have decided to take a pass going forward. I will take a cover that sticks above the bed an inch and a half and looks a bit less slick in exchange for the naturally superior water shedding ability of seals that are on top of and towards the middle or outside of the rail.
