How do you disable the auto brake when backing up a trailer so it doesn't scare the crap out of you? Went fishing earlier this week and truck recognizes that the "boat" is hooked up. When I attempt to launch (in reverse), it starts beeping but pressing "ok" mutes the alarm. I noticed if my foot is off the brake while backing up, at some point it will auto brake making me think I hit something then I have to change my shorts!! Surely there's a way to back up a trailer which is recognized by the truck and not have it lock the brakes up?? I noticed if I keep my foot lightly on the brake, it won't do this.

There is a button on the panel left of the steering wheel that has a cone on it. That will disable that feature.

For those of us who learned to backup in the 1970's, using the mirrors, this is just soooooo difficult to accept as advancing the cause of mankind.

I think I may have found the damn button! (Reading in the owner’s manual) On this model, when you put it in reverse ( no trailer attached) and on the display screen on the left and right bottom it has 2 small buttons. The one on the right appears to remove the trailer guide. Every time you click it changes, giving you 4 options Hopefully the one with just the red bar will allow me to back a trailer without the brakes locking.

You would think when the truck senses a trailer, whether it's the hitch, camera, or the light connection, it would auto turn the backup brake locking up. But no, you need to manually push button to turn off.

I would put money on his wiring is screwed on his trailer and the truck doesnt sense its hooked up. My truck disables it no matter what I have plugged into it so far

My truck slammed on the brakes with all three trailers I've used so far. It's quite disappointing.

My 4 pin trailer does not turn it off auto, the 7 pin flat bed does. It recognizes both trailers as well.

Took delivery last weekend, Limited TRD off road, experiencing the same issue. Can not back up trailer without truck getting really pissed at me, beeping multiple warnings and locking up brakes randomly.
It was mentioned to read manual, well I would and normally do except there is no owners manual with this vehicle. Dealer tells me after I'm hundreds of miles home that "The new Toyotas do not come with owners manuals any more, but they would be glad to order me one for $150.00" and that supposedly there is supposed to be "the manual" in the Toyota app on my phone. I can't seem to find any info relating to a manual. BUT... I can see if the doors are locked, how much fuel is in the tank, tire pressures, and I even found that every single drive I took is recorded and logged showing path and how well I behaved while getting there (SUPER SUPER CREEPY by the way),

I will try that button on the left of the steering column mentioned above. Tried the button under the climate control that looks like a trailer with an arrow, but that didn't help. Also the tow haul doesn't help either.

Otherwise I guess I'll use my trusty 200K miles 01 SR5 to tow with. At least that one can back up a trailer like a dream.

I towed by motorcycle trailer this morning. 4 wire flat. I pressed the car/traffic cone button on the row with auto start stop and had no problems. It's pretty much like the F150 I towed with and the BMW X5 I tow with. All three slam on the brakes if you don't turn the sensor off.
My Tundra also came with a manual and the quick reference guide. I read the reference guide, big as manuals from not long ago, the first night. I'm picking my way through the Manual as needed.

Very cool rig with the Shasta. If you're ever in the Weaverville, NC area stop by a place called the June Bug Resort. It's a retro step back. Fun stuff.

Have you taken it to your dealer? I've towed 7 different trailers with mine, 6 with a 7pin and 1 with a 4 pin. The only time the auto braking wasn't disabled was when I was pulling the 4 pin trailer. Every other trailer, the backup emergency braking was disabled without any interaction from me

Seems like there is a business opportunity for a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter that has a resistor inside that will fake the truck into thinking there is a trailer with brakes and thus turn off the braking.

I’m 49 years old and have had nearly every full-size pickup over the years…and I can conclusively say that I absolutely hate this feature. Every time I switch from forward to reverse backing up my challenging hillside driveway, this damn feature turns back on, starts beeping at me, and then slams on the brakes. I just want it off…and for it to stay off!

I’ve also dumped entire loads of lumber out of it trying to backup with my tailgate down. I’m sorry, but this is an epic fail by Toyota engineers. If you’re selling me this fabulously overpriced truck it should at the very least just function like a truck for christsakes! And do it without having to consult a manual and/or decipher some tiny symbol on a switch hidden down low out of sight!
