I read some stuff here on the forum and on the internet and please correct me if I am wrong.
The factory backup camera in the tailgate has a 6v power supply? Does the aftermarket usually have 12v?

Is there any spot near the rear lights or tailgate with a permanent 12V supply I can tap into?
I already exchanged my head unit and installed a front-facing HD camera. Now I want the backup camera to be HD as well. Of course!.

Can I use the same factory cable for the signal (does anyone know the wire color) to splice in a new HD camera? I would then just supply 12V to it and it should be ready to go. The screen switch for putting the truck in reverse is already setup with the new HU. Doable mod or am I missing something here?
Is there maybe even an adapter wire? I will make my own mount for the new camera, that's not a problem, it's just about avoiding to run a new wire all the way to the HU when there is already one ;-)

The 7 pin trailer plug has a 12v aux if you could tap in to it. Someone might make an adapter so you wouldn’t have to splice any wires. Not sure if it’s always hot or if your truck would then think a trailer was always hooked up.

This isn’t a tundra specific pic.

I am not so much worried about the power supply. Getting power there is easy. I am more worried about avoiding running a new cable through the firewall.

If you're running a cable from the rear, then you can go through the grommets down on the front passenger floor instead of the firewall.

While I do not know the colors for the Tundra, you should be able to reuse the same cables for the video signal. That being said, you said you have an “HD” camera in the front? Unless something has changed, I think most single RCAs (or 2 wire connections like the back camera would have) top out at around 540i. So it may not be able to carry a true HD signal regardless

I agree. That's why TVs use HDMI cables in order to achieve the high bitrate for true HD. I have over 10 cameras (3 different models) on my truck but, in my opinion, the stock backup camera actually has the best picture quality.

Most cameras that you can buy on Amazon use wide angle lenses with at least a 170° viewing angle, which gives you a distorted fish eye view and makes everything appear smaller on an already small screen. If you want to get a more detailed view, with less distortion, then install a camera with a 150° or less viewing angle. On Amazon, I've been able to find cameras between 135-150° you just have to look at the fine print.

Yeah, I prefer around 135° if it’s an option.
