    Hello all,

Currently in the process of eliminating some of the chrome on my 2016 sr5 extended cab. In specific the badges. I bought an overlay kit from ebay. All but 2 of them seem to be adhering well. The adhesive on the overlay is made by 3M. I cleaned surfaces and wiped down with rubbing alcohol before applying the overlays and then hit gently with a heat gun while applying pressure. 2 feel like they will definitely pop off. And the rest I'm not satisfied with.

Question is, does anyone sell actual new badges that are black (instead of overlays)?

Or do I just have a cheap set of overlays.... and there are good sets that you'd never have to worry about falling off?

Toyota does sell black replacement badges. I have the Toyota overlays and no issues with them coming off.

I literally did this very thing last night with an inexpensive Chinese kit from Amazon. Cleaned, degrease, alcohol wiped, apply and heat to ensure a positive seal.

Other than feeling like I was applying some generic auto parts store accessory crap, the appliques 'seemed' to adhear well, and provided an inexpensive and quick 'look' that I was trying to achieve. Tho, I did comment to my buddy on the phone while doing this, that the value will be determined the next time (today) that they go through a wash bay and next weeks freeze/thaw cycle.

If I were to apply them again, I would have gently cleaned up some edge details left from the molding process, but, no one will ever notice that tiny, almost microscopic, nib that my OCD picked up as I initially set the overlay.

I also added some Amazon sourced 3-D style T*U*N*D*R*A letters to the stamp in the tailgate as well.

    and...

wrapped the 3rd brake light/bed light in Vvivid brand smoked vinyl, trimmed out the clear areas and swapped for VLED 6-led high output bulbs. Then promptly blinded myself when checking for (bed) light bleed-through from my trim job

My overlays have been on for 6 years, can’t really tell they are overlays, as all went well putting them on. you can find solid black badges though, certainly a bit more than just covering up the chrome. I didn’t want to go through all the hassle of getting the old ones off, and then gettthe new ones straight

I have not had great luck with offbrand overlays. They do well for a while and start to peel when the temperature swings dramatically.

That said, I have the "4x4" overlay out of an OEM blackout kit that I do not need if anyone wants it.

My overlays held up great. Even the cheap bed inserts have done well.

Mine came with black badging except the 4X4 on the tail gate. I added a little gorilla glue to my ebay overlay and have had no issues.
