I’m just getting around to wiring up my BD light bar. I’m going to connect it to the OEM style switch. My question is regarding the amber back light switch. I’d like to tie the backlight to on with the switch. Can I just add another fuse tap to those switch wires to a switch on fuse?

    so assuming s8 light bar?

and you’re looking to have the amber backlight come on concurrently with the main beam?

Yes, ignition. The harness comes with 2 separate switches. One to operate the bar and one to operate the amber back lights. I want to do away with the switch for the backlights and just have them come on with the ignition. My first thought was to just cut the backlight switch and wire it into a fuse tap. Ill also have to use a fuse tap for the OEM switch that controls the light bar.

perfectly acceptable, minus I’d use an accessory wire over an ignition wire. As accy will drop out during cranking. This avoids a lot of potential issues.

What wiring harness are you running for the S8?

im not sure if you offer more than one for it, but it’s from Baja designs. I got it all squared away though. I just cut the switch for the backlight and ran it to an empty key on fuse.

    looking good!

Did you verify if the circuit for your backlight drops out while cranking (accy wire). If it is ignition wire and doesn’t drop out during crank, voltage can drop. If voltage drops, current requirements go up, possibly frying emitters or circuitry. BD makes some stout stuff and probably has some protection but ohm’s law should be taken into account.

I did not. It was more a “let’s try this”. Do you happen to know what would be an acceptable fuse to tap off of in the cab? I’ve read several threads after installing about fuse locations in the engine bay, but didn’t see much about the ones in the cab.

Off the top of my head, nope.

but a few minutes with a multimeter or test probe will tell you. In this case a test light will suffice, but overall I recommend people steer clear of those when probing wires themselves.

Looking for the voltage to drop off during crank, correct?
