Out and about running some errands and the battery just died on me no warning or any sign of trouble. Came out of the grocery store and nothing. It barely lit the dash up when I tried to start.
I carry a jump start pack and started the truck, noticed the volt meter was fluctuating a bit. Got home to put groceries away and got a Group 27F battery ordered at Batteries Plus.
Original OEM battery lasted 5 years and 4 months since I got the truck.
New battery in and everything back to normal. What surprised me was the speed at which the battery died absolutely no warning, no slow start nothing. I load tested the original battery and it failed miserably.
I did think when the truck reached 5 years about changing the battery but decided to push it to 6 years. Obviously that was a mistake.
    Still no harm done.

That has to be some kind of record...and in the TX heat! Smart to have a jump box with you. I carry the NOCO brand.

Yeah, I replaced mine about 3 years in. Went with X2 power AGM. Wouldn’t wait until it craps out cause you’ll be SOL.

That’s why we do preventative maintenance!

Happened to us once in our 1st gen Tacoma, no preceding weak starts or anything. Parked in front of Lowes to load a dishwasher then tried to start and she was done. Desert heat has a habit of killing batteries unexpectedly.

Mine died same way. I left the house and drove to work. I leave to go to a job site about 45 mins after getting to the office. Completely dead. Wouldn’t even turn over. Luckily Interstate Battery was a block away haha.

Mine lasted 5 years believe it or not - Utah isn’t exactly the most temperate climate. I think batteries just have a some of manufacturing variability floating around in them.

Not sure what reliability level they validate to, but at their volumes even 99.5% reliability sure means a lot of premature battery failures.

Yup, it's a mystery ... my 6th gen Camry lasted 6 years on OEM battery until I CarMax'd her.

It's common for batteries to die like that. It sucks though especially when you don't expect it. I had one do that to me at a gas pump.

Happened twice to me in my FGT. If one of the cells goes bad, it just dies. Vibration and heat will take it's toll on a battery.

I had the original toyota batt on my 05 Tundra for 8 years. One day I came out and it started like normal. Realized I forgot something and turned it off. Tried starting it again not 3 minutes later and it's dead like a doornail. So dead that it wouldn't accept a jumpstart. I had to replace it on the spot. First time I had a battery die to completely with no warning. 8 years was pushing it though. They don't make them like that anymore that's for sure.

You did very good with what you got out of it in TX. Mine died the same way a few months ago. I have a 2020 and I had been testing it at every oil change as well as maintaining with distilled water due to reports of the OEM battery just taking a dump like that. Had just tested it a couple of weeks prior, was out running errands, came out of the vet clinic and it was dead as a hammer. I got going with a jump pack and was fortunate that an Autozone my son was working at was just few blocks away. Used his discount and swapped out the battery in the lot and all has been good so far. I guess I should feel lucky getting 4.5 years out of it. Just wish it would give some warning. I don't know how else I could have prevented it. It had a bad cell when we tested it after taking it out. I had been thinking of just replacing it at the 4 year mark just as "preventative" maintenance, but kept pushing it because it was testing good. I guess I'll just swap it every 4 years now.

I had a 2004 Ram for 15 years and replaced the battery once. Must be all the electronics in new cars/trucks these days.

My 2019 died a few months ago. Toyota batteries seem to be not very good batteries. I never had such drastic battery deterioration of any brand.

I had Sears AGM battery in my Volvo for 12 years. It still had some juice, but I replaced it preventative while replacing alternator. I still use that battery as a secondary battery in my Tundra, to power 70qt ARB fridge.

Yeah, they don't make 'em like they used to. In 2011 I bought a 2000 4Runner with the *original* Panasonic battery.

When I traded it in for an F150 in 2013, it still had that battery.

The heat does kill batteries and often with the instant death mentioned. One I had died suddenly with a pop that sounded like a gun shot. I was sure the motor blew up or something (it was a Jeep), but just replaced the battery and it fired right up.

Mine did that at 2 years. Got home from work and parked truck to hook up boat for weekend. Changed clothes and went outside to back up truck to boat and dead. Dead cell and would not even jump start.

I"ve got a couple of old ATV batterys like that, not enough amps to crank quads but plety of power for my fish finder and still takes a charge.

On the way back to Florida from Colorado, I noticed starter motor ran slightly weaker. So I anticipated the battery can die somewhere on the way. Got off I70 to refuel somewhere Kansas or Missouri and stopped at gas station and it died. I always carry jump start battery. Restart it and drove to Autozone nearby to replace then after back to normal.

2018 stock battery still. I do carry a booster pack.
I know I am pushing it but I have like 8? Auto and Marine batteries to maintain.
So don't want to just replace it.
With the new compact chargers you can repair and slow charge a battery gone bad to life again.
Then keep it on small trickle or solar charger when parked for a few days or longer.
    Keep it at charge.
If you are at a low charge level for whatever reason, and you do a bunch of short trips you are asking for trouble.

I'm anxious to see how this new battery does. It's a Duralast gold; pretty sure made by Clarios, which is not my preference, but what was available in the moment. If it doesn't last any longer than the OEM, then going on a preventative replacement cycle with the OEM Toyota battery would be quite a bit cheaper with a better warranty. The AZ battery was $215 without my son's discount (about $200 with it) with a 3 yr full replacement warranty. I could have gotten the TrueStart if I had been closer to the local dealer for $128 with a 2 year full replacement warranty and then 5 more years prorated warranty.

Imposed recycled lead content requirements (by you know who) have greatly increased the higher probability shorter life spans.

FULL DISCLOSURE. I practiced good maintenance on my 2107's OEM battree and replaced it at 4 years and 11 months out of an abundance of caution.
