I have no Tundra - have an 06 Land Cruiser since 2015, and had a Lexus LX470 for about 7 years before that. Interested in Gen 2 to 2.5. I was going to lurk/search for what years were best but am impatient and am just gonna ask. I don't do too many mods - I am more about reliability on long road trips/touring. Any hints on trouble spots, or preventative maintenance issues would be appreciated - or point me to a Sticky area. Many thanks, Bill.

Welcome and greetings from Minnesota. If you are not interested in working on the truck (adding trans cooler), get yourself a 2018 for pulling trailers.

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! Notice that what has been posted so far is feature availability on different years. Pretty much any 2/2.5 gen Tundra is going to be very reliable.

2020 for Carplay too. The 19s do not have it. 2020 also comes with push button start and proximity key.

I'm torn on that one, and have sorta' decided I'm glad my '19 doesn't have this feature.

I do a lot of surfing and standup paddleboarding, and when I'm in the water I have a door cut key that I put in a lockbox and stash my regular keyring with fob key inside the truck.

With proximity key I'd have to put it in a Faraday bag. Not a big deal but an extra step to deal with, and my lockbox is pretty small.

My other gripe with the keyless entry, and this may just be a Mazda issue... My wife's CX-5 sometimes forgets to lock the door when you walk away from the car. So you have to either stand there and make sure you hear the beep, or click the fob to lock it (kinda' defeats the purpose of keyless)

Plus it freaks out if the car is running and you get out of the car with the fob in your pocket. First world problems, I know.

    OP, I'm very happy with my '19 SR5 4X4 w/TRD upgrade package.

Probably my only minor gripe is that I'd prefer that it had a external trans cooler, but not so bothered that I've gone to the expense of adding one yet.

At first I didn't think I liked the TSS stuff, but I've changed my mind on most of them. I really like the adaptive cruise (with follow distance shortened) and the BSM and rear cross traffic alert.

The 38 gallon tank is a nice option, but pretty shocking if I let it get close to empty and then fill it up.

I had a '00 before this one, so the added bells & whistles are a pretty big leap in tech, and the added HP, TQ, bigger brakes, and 2 more gears are night and day difference.

You can turn off the fob which allows you to store it(or a spare) in or on the truck.

Doors do not lock automatically, but all you have to do is touch the exterior door handle in the right spot and they will lock.

All vehicles with keyless entry/ignition that I have ever used, will briefly beep at you if you walk away while the engine is still running. Not sure if that's what you mean by "freaks out", but I find it a useful reminder.

My last two vehicles have had the keyless feature and I love it. It is (almost) one of the "must haves" for a new truck. YMMV

Hmmm, good to know. I wonder if wifey's Mazda does this. Is that a dip switch on the fob itself, or somewhere in the settings on the car?

Yeah on hers you can touch a button on the door handle and lock it. I do like the auto lock feature, but don't like that it forgets to do it sometimes.
