My Tundra actually sounds pretty good with the stock exhaust and single giant muffler, but this is a 400hp V8 and if I'm going to get 14.5 mpg, I'm going to at least enjoy the sound of it.

So, probably going to take it to my local Meineke muffler and have them build a custom true dual exhaust.

On most of my off-road rigs, I have the exhaust exiting just in front of the rear tires. Like so...

There is a bit more drone, but it has the best clearance, and I like my exhaust loud.

The other option is to have it exit 60's muscle car style just behind the rear tire and angled downward...

The worst exhaust I've seen, I actually saw today on my lunch break. I was following a newer Ram pickup with an aftermarket steel black bumper that looked to be of good quality, but it had exhaust cutouts in it. They routed the exhaust pipes straight out the back, which is the worst place to route exhaust for a vehicle that actually goes off-road. They would get crushed immediately on a mild obstacle.

This is very close to the bumper I saw...

Anyone who runs their exhaust straight out the back has no intention of actually taking their pickup off-road. Simply trying to turn around on a Forest Service road that is blocked would damage that exhaust.

So, wondering if anyone knows what the preferred routing method is for this generation of Tundra. Is there room for the exhaust to be ran out the side in front of the rear tires? Or do you have to route dual pipes down a singular channel and out one side?

Is there an aftermarket bolt on system that is nice, loud, tucked, and under $600?

I am not wanting to modify the exhaust for performance gains. It's sort of like the CAI system; I like the looks and the sound, even though the gains are either minuscule or non-existent.

My factory exhaust, with it's TRD tip, is low-hanging fruit in the woods around here. Just want something with more clearance and better sound.

For reference, the best-sounding exhaust I ever had was when I bought a police auction `97 Crown Vic with the 4.6 V8. I took it to an exhaust shop and told them to cut out the mufflers and replace them with straight pipes. That car sounded sweet! I got 27mpg out of that old police cruiser commuting to work. Loved it!

your 600 dollar limit is a tad off for most dual setups

lots of discussions about this, the search bar will guide you thru lots of posts about exhaust for the Tundra

I was going to shorten my exhaust with turndowns, but the exhaust guy said it would wear the tire out more so I just stuck with original setup. Stainless works system is dual outlet on same side so I guess when you off road you just watch the passenger side more than driver side for clearance.

I guess I'm old school. I've never bought a pre-formed exhaust system for a vehicle. I've always relied on the muffler shop to build a custom system based on my needs. Which is why I was hoping to get advice on a route in order to avoid headaches in the future, like servicing the transfer case, or adding a lift or skid plate in the future.

Cut the tail section by the hanger good to go. This can be done with duals also. And I do offroad sometimes

Before you do anything, call Keith @dirtydeeds to get the info. He does custom setups if you want, and he's the only one ive seen sell a muffler setup with a sound guarantee. He can also explain why you don't want a dual exhaust on the 5.7 powertrain. He will freely give the info and guidance and has the history to back up what he says way more than any of us keyboard warriors. Even if you're not buying from him, talk to the guy.

You can get a sense for a “dump” style by just temporarily removing the tailpipe at the muffler connection. Dumps before the axle are significantly louder than after/full tail pipe and not in a “sounds great way”. Getting over the axle then cutting is very common for the offroad style trucks on here (which could be done with stock, dirtydeeds or other options). Dirtydeeds 8” standard is a great choice, then shorten the oem tailpipe a hair.

    ^ This X 1000 on @dirtydeeds ..
Keith's systems are a direct bolt-on to existing OEM pipes..

I'd seriously consider skipping the dual exhaust and going with one of his single-out BAMs.
If you want it loud, I'd consider a 6", it will give you loudness and rasp when you floor it.

Better yet call him and he can make you whatever you want.
He will discuss with you your wants and needs: loudness, towing, etc..
    He guarantees his work..

No reason to have a local shop do a hack job and you end up with the drone from hell and a loss of torque, like I had with my Magnaflow.
I then found Keith and got the perfect Tundra exhaust.

I've run his 8", 10", and 12" Bam with his Helmotz resonator.
For the common man the 10" is the sweet spot.....

Look at this work of art he custom-made for a customer..

Trying to convince someone that they need to spend $1600 on an exhaust system that grew up in the 80's when Flowmasters and an H-pipe for $200 was considered high-dollar is a tough sell. I get the concerns over too low of back pressure will diminish low-end torque. So will likely just replace the factory muffler with a decent welded aluminum muffler. Might trade the Tundra in for the new Landcruiser in a few months, anyway.

Next time change the wording of your thread if you don’t want recommendations for “the best ____”

Especially if you’re planning on trading in the tundra for a LC, you could very easily swap the DD exhaust back to stock and then sell the DD here or locally. There’s absolutely a market for them - even used. Couldn’t do that with a hacked up, weld-on Magnaturd-master or whatever. :notsure:

You'll need to let go of what stuff used to cost. Everything is more expensive now. What can you actually get for 20 bucks these days? Used to get a lot, but the dollar doesn't go as far anymore.

I have this exact system on my SC'd 17 and it is fantastic!. I replaced my TRD dual system with Keith's and got all the low end torque back while increasing the sound quality of the exhaust without the drone. Absolutely the best system for duals on the V8!

Keith has sales and group buys quite often.
His systems are easily reversible back to stock.

I hope you do go with the Menikie hack job.
You will end up with the drone from hell, but perhaps that's what you are looking for..
Hell, get you some headers, cherry bomb glass packs, and run 'em straight out the back Mr 1970..:eek2:
    Good luck Bro..
