This usually well behaved guy with zero cares in the world ate my only key fob.

    2016 Tundra

Am I stuck going to the dealership to program a new one?

    Better/best options?

Thanks for any help! Trying to fix today or asap

You could go to a locksmith and get a new remote and get it programmed. If the old one still works get the AJT cover. Local locksmith is going to be cheaper than the dealer for sure.

Good call. I’ll have to ask the local small town guy if he does fobs, I need to ask about our back door lock anyway.

I can unlock the truck, just can’t get the lock button to work yet.

I need to find where I can order that tiny black button. Maybe AJT will have a lead or extras.

Find some sturdy plastic of similar thickness at a hobby shop. Dremel it to fit right.

Are you thinking you can find a button, remove the old one and solder in the new one? If so, good on you, but way more effort than I would put in especially considering that fob is now more prone for failure.

Have you ordered actual fobs yet, or did you just get the cases from AJT? AJT does not offer/make the actual fob.

For OEM fobs, I found the best deal at https://northcoastkeyless.com/ But make sure you get the correct model. My 2021 had two options.

I tried a local locksmith but found it cheaper to go with the local dealership you gharged me $75 to program the fob and cut the new key. It is a small town dealership however, YMMV.

There is another option where you can rent a programmer but the cost and hassle of that was not worth it to me. https://tomskey.com/

I would also strongly recommend having an additional backup fob stashed on the truck. I am always amazed how many adults do not have a spare key/fob, much less one in a place that would be useful.

Haha I’m thinking a little piece of rubber won’t be hard to recreate. Although I do weld and solder every single day for work.

Ordered new cases from AJT for this internal that still works fine.

Have multiple keys, truck only came with one fob, don’t really need a second as it’s just a convenience. Will be getting an auto start this winter as well for the first time ha I’ve put them in all my family members cars for years, will give it a go this time around.

Noted. I always wanted a pyrite mica Tacoma back when those were affordable. Closest I ever got was my dream truck (that was stolen and totaled)

Correct me if I’m wrong, I was under the belief that the truck won’t lock if u have the keyfob(spare) inside of it.

I cut a piece of rubber and put a microscopic amount of glue on it (and swapped it for the alarm button).

Just waiting on the body to arrive.

Correct. I hate it. I leave my dog in there with the AC running when I run into places that don’t allow him and he’s just sitting there unlocked. Haven’t found a work around yet.

It’s absurd that companies don’t allow us to have any modicum of control over simple features like when the doors lock and don’t.

That said, you can live without the fob no problem. My Silverado work trucks only have a key. No fob. Same with all my old Toyotas before that last 3 between the wife and I. It’s purely a convenience to be able to click unlock before you get to the door rather than having to turn a key (gasp) :D

Not exactly. It is possible to turn your fob off which then allows you to lock the fob inside or stashed somewhere on the outside like I have done.

And you can use the physical key to lock the door with your dog inside while the vehicle is running. But then IME, the fob will not unlock it, you must use the physical key.

I leave my spare key in a second location so having one in the ignition and one one me would be a change up I could consider. Thanks.
