I just recently purchased a 2005 Toyota Tundra. 4.7 168k miles. I’m wanting to change the oil and filter as I’m unsure what brand is on there (it’s new but idk what’s in the truck for oil). I was thinking an oversized filter would be beneficial but having a hard time tracking down what options there are for this? I’ve read some things about the Napa 1516 but saw a post about the anti drainback valve not being sufficient for these motors? I’ve read about the m1-209 filter as well. What is the best? What oil should I use? Conventional or synthetic and what brand?

There’s been several trucks that have gone over a million miles on 4.7s with the OEM filter and TGMO.

Beyond that, it’s gonna be based on your specific use conditions. For most people, any major brand oil and filter, changed at recommended intervals, will be fine.

You can buy the Toyota oil filter at Walmart for $6, some have used a larger mobil 1 with good success.

So pretty much a quality good filter and any oil? Is synthetic asking for trouble with this high of mileage? Possible leaks if it’s never been used before?

It’s anyone’s guess without any further information about your truck and its current condition, but more than likely you’d be fine.

    Napa Gold/Wix Filter - 1348
    5w-30 synthetic Gas Engine - 6.5QT-7QT
    Interval - 5K miles

I've been running Napa Gold (wix) oil filters for over 10 years with no issues. Use them on everything I own. As far as oil goes, any good synthetic 5W-30 will work. I am partial to Rotella (again, use it everything I own) and now that they have their 'Gas Engine Line' of oils, that is what I have been using. I was planning on switching from the previous Napa 5w30 synthetic and advance auto parts had a sale for $2.49/quart so I bought all the 5w30 they had. It was enough oil to do the next three oil changes in my FGT and the old lady's car. Rotella has always been known to have a heavy duty addictive package in their oils.

Yeah I’m sorry I don’t have really any more info. It looks cared for but no real service records to speak of. I ran it on Toyota’s website and it shows recall work performed. But not much maintenance (which is scary) but it’s a decent deal especially for the area and I really want a 1st gen. If it’s made it to 168k it’s got more in it I imagine.

Rotella t6 5w40 I feel like is the jack of all trades for oil. People use it in everything with great results. Their heavy duty oils are very widely used and rarely complained about. I may try the gas oil as I haven’t ran it yet. I imagine it can’t be bad at all. Did you happen to mean the 1348 filter? 1358 comes back with a different thread size than the 1348 which is what Napa recommends.

That is correct, 1348, OP corrected. 1358 is on the bikes lol.

I use Rotella T6 in my R1, Rotella 15w40 T4 in my Duramax and Yamaha Raider and now their gas line in my FGT. Their T4/T6 is JASO MA rated (wet clutch) so I have used it in all my bikes (40+ of them) for the last 10 years. They make a solid product. Can't say I've noticed anything different now that it is in my tundra, but my bikes shift smoother with it.

Good thing about these trucks, they are extremely tough. Even with poor maintenance, they can be brought back to life pretty easily. Mine had been sitting for who knows how long when I bought it and it took a little elbow grease and time to bring it up to speed.

Interesting read. To sum it up, appears the OEM Yota filter has 225 sq/in of filter media vs the competition with 115 sq/in +/-. I usually go with Napa because, one they deliver to my work for free and two, we are in fleet pricing so I think I pay $3.00 for a Gold filter. I also change my air filter every other oil change with a Napa gold for $7. $10 for both filters feel like a deal to me. I’ll call my local dealer tomorrow and see what they charge for a D3 out of curiosity.

Toyota filters at my local dealer are buy 3 get 1 free. Doubt all dealers do this, but I've been buying oem filters for probably around 10 years this way. They let you mix and match as well if you have multiple Toyotas, which I do.

I use the Mobil M1-301a and Royal Purple 5w30 and run it for 15k between changes. I've sent a sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis and will post when it comes back.

I changed to Rotella 5W/40 oil and factory filter. I’m very pleased with
the improved oil pressure increase.I live in Texas and our battle
is with the heat. Sitting in traffic jam with 105 Ambient heat is a stress on oil.
I feel very confident I’m getting the lubrication and cooling from this oil.

Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic, Toyota OEM filter with a new Toyota OEM sealing washer on the drain plug with each drain, 5,000 mile changes. I don't know if it's best, but since new (20 years), the truck still doesn't burn or leak any oil.
