Best oil to use in Tundra w/ 150k miles on it

    I have a 2006 Tundra w/ 150k miles on it, best brand oil to use... conventional or synthetic? My first Toyota and not sure what's best for it. Thanks for any help! -Steve

    Be prepared for an all out "I use brand x" responses based on little more than the motor still runs.

    That said, I run the Toyota yzzd3 filter because it's a little big bigger than the other that fits. For oil I have been running Mobil 1 synthetic for the last 9 years, usually the high mileage formula. I dont normally keep it more than 5k miles before changing. I get it at Walmart in the 5 quart jugs for about $28 each.

    A lot of the driving I do is short trips, that isn't great for my oil and it shows when I change it. I think about changing it at around 4k miles just because I'm the type to set my alarm at 5am and hit snooze until 5:45 before waking up.

    Mobil1 from Wallywurrrl for about $25 for 5 quarts here. I just made the switch to Mobil1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic last year and its created a little weeping around some gaskets. I switched to standard Full Synthetic last month and the weeping has slowed. The weeping is like a glaze than it is a drip. Its like the synthetic molecules are perfectly aligned and squeeze through.

    Next change will be to the Mobil1 High Mileage Synthetic.

    Prior, the 02’ was running on Whatever Brand a Shop had ‘Synthetic Blend’. I think the Mobil1 has quieted the engine and the detergent action cleaned out a lot of the sludge based on the last change.

    Hoping the ‘High Mileage’ formula conditions the seals back as advertised.

    Thanks for answering! I was concerned with going from conventional to synthetic or vice versa... because I have no idea what's in there now to be honest. Was looking for a solution that would be ok for either scenario. Bought the truck used so unable to ask what oil was used before. Tuck runs well, want to keep that way of course.

    I also am a Mobil 1 full synthetic high mileage user. It’s what I use in all my vehicles and have for years. It has seemed to work well for me.

    I would go full synthetic if I were you. I’ve heard it said that if full synthetic is used, you don’t want to switch back to conventional. But if conventional is used, it’s fine to begin full synthetic. I’m not an expert by any means, but I believe that is kind of the rule with engine oil.

    If I’m wrong, please somebody chime in! :thumbsup:

    Congrats on the Tundra by the way!

    mobil 1 full synthetic extended performance is all i run in all my vehicles.. my 06 avalon, 01 taco, 06 corolla with 750k on it... its good oil and its cheap at walmart.
    OEM filters because theyre cheap and are really well made

    Costco always has good prices on Mobil 1 full synthetic so that is what I use for my vehicles. For a filter I usually go with a WIX or the Fram Gold. The cheap Frams are no good but from what I have read the high end ones are pretty good and I really like the bed-liner type coating they put on it, it makes it really easy to get a grip on.

    Synthetic, always synthetic. Full synthetic only.

    Personally I use Amsoil in everything that it makes sense. From engine to differential, except for transmission (Mainly due to the Jeep transmission I had previously and the effort it took to move it over.) My current jeep that I bought used I recently moved to Walmart SuperTech as it burns oil and isn't worth the cost of a better oil at this point. More expensive oils will have more detergents and/or anti-wear additives.

    Maybe even more important than the oil is the filter. Always run a quality filter it will help pull the wear particles out of your oil. I run Amsoil or wix depending on the application.

    I don’t know if it’s “the best”, but I bought 6 qts of Amazon Basic 10W 30 synthetic blend for $18 along with 6 Toyota oil filters. I believe the filters were $23.

    My 1st Gen went 300k on 5W-30 Walmart oil.

    Changing your oil is more important than the type. Tow alot? Change it more often. Dusty roads? Change it more often.

    Highway driving, change it twice a year.

    Synthetic is good oil, but it's not worth the extra money.

    Key take aways:

    1) Use the proper viscosity as spec’d for the vehicle.

    2) Changing often is better than not enough, or dino vs. syn.

    3) Heavy Service considerations defined as towing, city driving, and extreme high temps driving.

    First gen tundras are 5w-30
    2nd gens are mostly 0w-20 or 5w-20

    Noticing some slight valve clatter when the engine was cold, I began using Castrol Magnatec. No more valve clatter and better adhesion to reduce wear. Usually get it at Walmart (5 Quart jugs) for around $20.00. My 2011 Crewmax has 90,000 miles and runs great! Been using Castrol Magnatec since 40,000 miles.

    My 2002 has 174,000 miles and my 2007 has 299,000 miles, and both of them are treated to non-synthetic oil. I don't know, and don't care what brand it is, but I know it's whatever the dealership uses.

    My truck used dealer oil changes until I got it. I finally changed my oil after a few months, using a Toyota d3 filter and Quaker State 5w-20 UD synthetic.

    The standard Mobile 1 5w-30 in the silver bottle/lid is a very good oil. (Better wear numbers at 118k psi than the Extended Protection 88k psi or high mileage 83k psi.)

    I also like the Mobile 1 0w-30 (at 115k psi).

    Have any of you bought the box of mobil1 oil from walmart? It's pretty much like a box of wine. It priced out to basically get 2 quarts free compared to buying jugs.

    Others have said all there is to say, but in the interest of another visible vote to help:

    Mobil 1 5w30 Full Synthetic High Mileage Extended Performance, silver jug with gold stripe on the label. Wallyworld $24.95 for 5 qt a few days ago. The few dollars difference with cheaper stuff isn't worth my peace of mind.

    It's supposed to be good for 15,000 miles, which is 10,000 more than I was used to, so I aim for 7000-10,000 intervals. I either drive short distances in a city, or dusty dirt roads in the desert. No towing though.

    Toyota YZZD3 filter, I think I saw a 6-pack on Amazon, but in any case pretty cheap.

    Not sure how much my vote counts, though, since I arrived at those decisions by SEARCHING THE FORUM <ahem> searching the forum to see what has already been said on the topic. I don't have any of my own expertise to add.
