Is it better to have my transmission rebuilt or fi d a reputable store online that has a good warranty?

Any recommendations on where to buy?

Find small transmission shop where the owner is the builder. That will be the best quality at the best possible price.

X2, I like to have my stuff rebuilt locally, also if there are problems they can address it there.

I had a crap Peugeot Manual Ford Ranger trans rebuilt locally and they accidentally put in an extra shim and it chewed itself up first trip out. Shop was pissed I drove it, but The noise didn’t start till I was a few miles away.

He told me he’d be able to tell if I ran it without oil. Shop did the right thing, called me and told me it was their fault and that they fixed it and it needed about $450 of new parts, they covered it and refunded me some money for the hassle.

I have it at a transmission specialist now. They are going to see what they can do.

This got me thinking, I have issues looking for information about my truck because it's the v6 model.

Is there a 4runner or Tacoma model that has the exact same engine and transmission combo that I can use as a reference?

I don’t know what year your truck is, but i wonder if the transmission shop can upgrade your tranny with 2004 bits and pieces?

You don't have any info about your truck posted, so it's impossible for us to know.

It may have changed over the years, but the earlier Tundras had the 3.4L V6, same engine as first generation Tacomas (1995-2005) and 4Runners (though they run on a different timeline so I'm not positive which 4Runners had that engine).

    Not sure about the transmission.

There are fewer V6/Manual Tundras out there, but they're out there, and some site members here have them.

Most likely Yes but you need to know what You have first. Check the driver door info card. If its an A340 (E or F) then a 3rd gen 4runner may match.

I got mine rebuilt from Yota1 out of Riverbank CA. Got it a year ago for $2600 with core. Its as sweet as can be.

    It's the 2002 3.4l v6 with a 4 speed automatic. A340e.

I was trying to see if the transmissions out of the Tacoma and 4runner were interchangeable with mine.

They are yet there might be some subtle mounting differences that you can work around easily.

The A340 is a good tough trans - yet unfortunately in the 2001-2002 4Runners (and probably other models using those 2 years) the OD bearings tend to wear out first. Now by first I mean somewhere around 300-350K they go out and the sounds of marbles enters the picture -starts with a minor whine. Mine suffered from it at 337K but I think I could have done a better jobs (much better) at trans fluid OCIs - its should have been new fluid every 30k and I went 100k twice - really dumb me.

The trans is so tough many add the supercharger and it has no issues with it - you might find a good used one or just go the rebuilt route.

Item 47 in this link is a How to change the trans - it might help with your project if you go that route from T4R - Org. 2nd vid is Timmy the Toolman's How to on trans swaps.Luck https://youtu.be/oZDSjlxl2Q4?feature=shared

Well yet its not cheap - about $400. They'll pay for core return - just slap it on the same crate the new one arrived on and call them to pick it up.

I don't know if mine really needs a rebuild. I believe the pump seal went out. It shifts fine for the most part. Every once in awhile it'll shift into 2nd really hard after I turn it on.

It just leaked out like 2 qts randomly one day after I got a p0770 code.

Funny thing is it only has 182k miles. I'm still figuring out my best option.
