So most posts I’ve seen are back in 2017-2019 so figured I’d ask to see if anything has changed. I purchased a used 2020 crewmax and need to get a tonneau cover. I see the bakflip mx4 and extang solid fold 2.0 are still readily available. Ruggedliners don’t seem to be available anywhere. Any other new contenders for this area other than those mentioned and gator covers( reviews seem bad)?

Also I know when I am going to need to use the whole bed so I don’t mind taking cover off which solid fold says is easy to remove. There’s not any videos on this so I’m curious how hard is it really to remove this for temporary full bed usage and doing it often does it destroy those waterproofing seals? Also how does solid fold compare to the oem cover(which some post point towards being relabeled ruggedliner covers) which is about 1100 through most dealers here in Maryland.

I have had 2 BakFlip MX4’s and they rock! When you need the whole bed it flips up and rests on your cap where rubber bumpers are mounted on the top and there are two bars that flip up and hold the top up out of the way. It blocks your rear view but it is a truck with side mirrors.

Check out the videos on their website or YouTube

Yea I have seen the mx4. Definitely a nice looking cover but prefer to not block the back window if possible which is why I would consider just removing the cover when I need to. When it flips up it’s not rubbing against the paint at all on the cab?

No, never had an issue with that but it is not up a lot only when I haul something and need the whole bed

The 2 knobs on the underside of the top is easy to screw off and with two people pick it up and sit in your garage or something. If only one person after you unscrew the knobs, stand in the bed and slide it towards the tailgate. The you can stand in the center and lift it off

I have an MX4 and have to agree that the functionality is pretty damn good. And in all honesty the panel doesn’t come close to rubbing any paint when it’s covering the rear window. It’s really nice feature.

HOWEVER (and this is a BIG however) the build quality is piss poor. Mine is literally falling apart after two years and minimal use (28 months of ownership-11k miles). Many broken pieces and tidbits and the panels themselves leak terribly. Nothing stays remotely dry in the back of my bed.

Unless my cover was assembled by a drunken employee, the quality is straight up poo IMHO. Unfortunately their customer service matched. I was a long time user of their products…now never again.

I have the MX4 and have been less than impressed. They do have a good warranty and stand by it though so that is a plus. Here’s my story….

purchased the mx4 and bakbox for my 2019. Had it on about 5 months and it developed a leak in the middle of the cover. I called the company and they sent a new cover. I have to say, I really was happy with the cover and warranty until I got the second one. Next one has piss poor assembly to where the latch cables continuously fell out of the track. The worthless taped on rubber pieces to keep from scratching the hell out of the top when you flip it up fell off in about 3 seconds of Texas heat. And several of the plastic pieces were broken when I received it.

So, I scavenged all the pieces off the old cover before destroying it per the warranty so I can keep cobbling this $1000 hunk of shit together until I bite the bullet for the diamond back.

    Sorry for the rant.

When I spoke with customer they could not wrap their heads around the idea that the panels were leaking and not the rails. I took many photos for them (after rain storms) to document the problem. About sixty photos in all over several emails. Then they said I needed to send a video with a hose running over the cover to PROVE it to them. I lost it after that! I am going to waste more of my money (water ain’t free) to prove to them where it’s leaking from when I already had that documented.

Mind you I started this within weeks of owning the product.

I have resigned my self to two facts at this point.

A.) I have a 1k paperweight attached to the rear of my truck that will need to be replaced in the near future.

B.) I will do everything in my power to put my story out there to save others from making the financial mistake I did…

I had a BakFlip F1 for 8 years on a previous truck. Far as I know it’s still in use.
Have a MX4 for a few years on current truck.
    Both have been great.

I am by no way sponsored by BakFlip but I am surprised. I had one on my 2010 DC Tundra for 10 years and it never leaked up to trade in. I have another one now for the past 4+ years on my 2018 CM Tundra and the same with it. Actually the one I have now came with some issues of the rubber coming off in one spot. I called them and they said they would send mew rubber, when I got it I was given a set of rubber for “the entire cover”. Every single piece was in there. By the time it came I had cleaned the glue off, trimmed the rubber pieces (2 small ones) and glued them back on with 3M double sided tape.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. I have driven for over 100 miles in rain and when I made it where I was going I had minimal dampness in the bed. I adjusted the top and fixed that

I have owned them before in the past as well as some family members. The older ones were top notch in all honesty and held up incredibly well. I heard they were bought out within the last few years, pre COVID. Maybe the new owners cheapened them up?…if it’s true of course…

Honestly don’t know much about that particular model. But I have had Extang products before in the past and like them. I would chose it over a BakFlip product (however I am clearly bias).

I have the Lomax, love it and it’s solid aluminum . Folds up nice and keeps the bed dry. Had a bakflip before and it came delaminated. Switched to the lomax. I would recommend it.

One big warning: If you want to use the rail system tie-downs, make sure the cover you want allows for them. I love my Undercover Armor, but I'm going to get rid of it because I need be able to use those tie downs without removing the whole installation.

Yeah. I did a FaceTime video with them to show it dripping right from the center. Was lucky that it had just rained.

I have read the subsequent posts here and will say that is exactly why I chose bakflip. Everyone loved them on here. There were many posts about longevity and durability, etc. But I have to agree that they have changed something in the manufacturing process. I do regret my decision to purchase it but I did the best research I could to come to that decision so I own it. I have succumbed to the fact it will not last and I will sink more money in a diamondback later.

I have a newly installed (did it myself in about 1 1/2 hours) Gator EFX Hard Fold Tonneau Cover. I have washed my truck and had no leaks so far. I made sure all was aligned properly on the bed rails and am so far very happy with it. Installed the drain lines via the plastic body plugs below the back window of the bed. They worked like a champ for the little water that traveled down the bed rails.

Cant you just use aftermarket tiedowns? I believe there are designed to work with tonnea covers https://billettiedowns.com/

It's not the tie-downs themselves, it's because most of the covers mount where the rails are so you lose them.

The Bakflip comes with brackets that drop the rails down a couple inches so you retain the use of them. In the pic with the cover folded open, you can kinda' see the silver drop-down brackets and the new lower rail location.

I just put an MX4 on my truck a couple weeks ago, so I'm hoping the quality stays as good as it seems to be, right now I'm super happy with it, but we'll see. Hopefully the 5 year warranty won't get used. :fingerscrossed:

I also got the TS rails so I can run these Elevate racks with the tonneau cover. It's surprising there aren't more options for having both racks and cover.

Cool, i was hoping to not move my bedrails and the mx4 seems to be a hit or miss when it comes to quality control. Also moving the bed rails down seem to be a hit or miss as well as some people have complained that the rails move around to much when relocated.

I have bought a used Diamondback to replace my Undercover Armor. I just have to go get it. My cousin picked it up for me because he lives near the seller. Hopefully I will get it when I go home (family home) for Christmas.

Lomax trifold with the Adarac Pro Rack system on a Tundra... They work together well. Nice to be able to haul a kayak and keep all your stuff out of sight and locked up under the cover...
