Looking to buy a 35' travel trailer that weighs in at 8700' dry. 850' tongue weight. I have a 2017 crewmax and although this is within its range I'm wondering what do you recommend as the best weight distribution hitch to make it safest. Thanks

IMHO, that’s too much for the tundra to pull safely.

Check out our towing section and this thread. I put this together for you.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/tow-ratings-guide-how-to-be-safe.39211/

There’s a lot that goes into towing a 35’ conventional trailer. Personally, I wouldn’t even do it with my single rear wheel 3500 diesel. Dually…yes, but at that point I should have went 5th wheel anyway.

Check out some of the threads in this section and ask some questions. Find some of the local members where you’re located and see if they have a trailer you can load down and see what you think.

Rent a camper before buying one. Get a 26’ or less and see what you think.

    Hope this helps a bit.

It's the In laws camper. They bought an RV and are willing to sell the camper to me for 10k which is well under value. They've hauled it with a 2006 f250 for its entirety. Honestly the farthest I'll haul it is 20 miles so I figured the tundra would handle that.

Buy it and resell it. Make some money and get something more appropriate for your situation (that’s what I would do).

It really doesn’t matter if you are towing 5 miles or 500 miles. An overloaded truck can crash just as easy at mile 6 as mile 492.

    Things to consider.

Wow. That's 12 feet longer and over twice the MT weight of what I pull. But what do I know.

Too much for a Tundra by about 3,500 pounds if using dry weight. Get this unit weighed and the numbers will start talking. I bet that 8,700 pounds dry is more like 9,500 pounds empty and 10,200 with your stuff in it. Now put yourself, your family and your stuff in there and the 16,000 GCVWR is all used up and then some.
Pulling my 27' camper that weighs 5,500 pounds dry ends up adding a little over 8,000 pounds to the rolling package by the time it is ready to camp with stuff and people.

However, if you do go forward with this I would recommend the Equalizer hitch or the Blue Ox. Both are great.

I had an Equalizer hitch and it did its job. It’s capable of working with trailers with surge brakes, although the surge braking is reduced somewhat by the Equalizer torsion bars.
That said, if you take your vehicle and trailer to CAT scales and compare the scale results with the load limit stickers inside the drivers side door, I’d bet you’d find the drive axle considerably overloaded along with max payload of the truck.

It's not within its range because you will likely be over GVWR, axle weight rating, and the maximum tongue weight rating with a trailer like that. Its weight may be lower than what Toyota claims can be towed, but those numbers are with the perfectly balanced trailer. When you have propane and batteries on the tongue and other crap in the trailer your tongue weight on that rig is easily over 1200 lbs.

Mine is still good but it really is the max that I would recommend towing with a Tundra. It is close. See attached.
That is a Jayco 267 BHS with a published dry weight of 5,500 pounds.
i would never try to pull a 35’ 9,000 pound bumper tow with a tundra.

    Your Tundra gross is 7400?

Sorry but I have to agree with others that say that this is too much trailer but, if you are going to do it, suggest you look at the Equalizer E4 14,000/1,400 lbs model WDH.

That is an interesting question. I guess that I assumed that if I stayed below the axle weight and below the Gross Combined that I was OK.
No, my Tundra as a GVW of 7,200 pounds.....
So it would appear that I am over-weight towing my 27' Jayco. Ouch!

This is one of the reasons many here recommend < 26' box. Mines a 23' and my first trip proved me 40# overweight.

Thanks for posting the pic of your scale paperwork. I think a lot of folks w/Tundras that are looking to tow w/them are either inexperienced or 1st timers when it comes to towing. So, the door stickers and manuals, etc. are kinda abstract concepts. I've talked w/a lot of people that had no idea you could even weigh your rig to verify compliance, etc.. I think seeing things like this help folks to realize that, in most states, weigh stations, etc. don't just apply to semis and similar.

Having this done is inexpensive and fairly quick. I'd recommend that everyone take a few minutes after loading up their set ups for travel to get weighed and see where they really are. It all adds up quick!!!!

If you do happen to head to the scales, don’t forget Mom, the kids, and the dog.:D All contribute (take away) payload.
I pulled a 24’ enclosed cargo trailer from Phoenix to Charleston. 2200 miles. I weighed the entire rig 4 times, with Mom LOL. I think about the maximum you can pull with a bumper style hitch on these trucks is ~7200 lbs. +/- whatever trim your truck is. If you do buy a WD hitch, anything rated more than 1000/10,000 is overkill for a 1/2 ton.
Even though the Equalizer is good at moving weight to the steer axle, you usually end up maxed out on the drive axle before the steer axle is at max.
You can still get more weight on the steer axle with a 5th style hitch which puts the trailer tongue weight in front of the drive axle instead of behind it.
Sometimes you just need a bigger truck.

Well stated. I have said for a while that my trailer is really the max my truck should be towing. Unfortunately I am actually about 200 pounds over on the truck itself and my trailer alone loaded for camping is right about 7,500 pounds. I guess that backs that up :)
Is the truck more capable? Absolutely.
Is Toyota playing it safe on their ratings? Absolutely.
Does it matter that the truck is under-rated when I crash or cause some problem that I may be liable for? NO.

I have a trailer that weighs 4300 lbs dry. Although I did tow it with my Tacoma and it was within specs I upgraded to my Tundra. I am not a trailer or towing expert but from everything that I've read just because it says you can doesn't mean it's safe or you should tow near max capacity.

We originally looked at a 19' TT with a GVWR of 4400# and thought about the Tacoma. Until the wife saw the 23RSS and that put us squarely in the Tundra zone.
At this point I put my foot down and said nothing bigger since any other brand truck was out of the question. To this day I'm not sure she heard me.:anonymous:
