I have had my Kuat bike rack on the hitch for a week or so and the safety systems are a PITA. I turn off the back up alert in the first place or that will slam on the brakes. That was easy enough. But then when I do go into reverse I get a loud steady beep... which can be silenced easily enough by pressing the OK button so that is alright, I guess. But then it throws a dirty backup sensor warning and shows the left rear sensor in orange. I can clear that by hitting the back button... but the message just keeps coming back as I drive... I can hit the back button but about 5 seconds later the error message is back... and this behavior persists until I turn the engine off and back on and drive without backing up.... which makes the center of the display useless. Apparently Toyota didn't test this mess with a bike rack.

Can you not simply turn off all rear driving aides? Don't own a Gen3 so Im genuinely curious, not being a smastass

I have it turned off with the dash button. That was in the second sentence above. I need to get the manual out and see if there is yet another level of "off".

Edit: apparently the dash button only turns off the Parking Brake Assist, not the Intuitive Parking Assist.

From the manual... can turn off the intuitive Park Assist from the display meter and that setting will persist with engine off/on cycles. I'll try that next time I drive. That should stop the beeping but it remains to be seen if it clears the "dirty sensor" issue, which is the main problem.

Also from the manual: The intuitive parking assist may not work properly:
When equipment that may obstruct a sensor is installed, such as a towing eyelet, bumper protector (an additional trim strip, etc.), bicycle carrier, or snow plow

So, hopefully turning it off from the meter will do the trick.

I have a Kuat rack also. I have the same warnings as you but I do not have the orange light warning that keeps coming up as you drive. Once I hit the ok to silence the warning as I back up then it won’t go off again until I back up somewhere else

In my case the audio warning does nor recur unless I back up again, it just the stupid "dirty sensor" message. That is just visual and fills the center display... and can only be cleared temporarily.

I have not had that warning but maybe it’s the difference in the model of the bike rack. Just a guess

I might cover a sensor more than mine

Looks like this, except in my case only the left rear sensor is in error state. For some reason the right side does not also fault.

I hope and believe that turning it off from the meter will work.

I use a Fox tailgate pad and get the same warnings and errors when a bike is loaded.

There are two dash buttons in my Platinum. One near the shifter that controls the automatic parking brake. Another one to the left of the steering wheel that turns off the Intuitive Park assist, or whatever feature that is that slams on the brakes when backing up a trailer. As others have mentioned, depending on your trim, you may need to find this setting in the display menu on the instrument cluster, if you don’t have a hard button to the left of the wheel.

If I read the manual correctly that hard button turns off the emergency automatic braking. There is a dash light that illuminates for that. But that does not turn off intuitive parking assist which is just the beeps when you get near stuff. That needs to be done on the display as far as I can tell. When I get my error message the dash gains another light which shows intuitive park assist is in fault. I'll get some pics next time.

Yeah, the beeps are annoying. I forgot about that. Gotta hit that ‘ok’ button on the steering wheel to silence. But at least it doesn’t slam on the brakes when I’m backing the trailer into the parking spot. That scared the absolute crap out of me first time it happened.

SO happy to have a '13 without all that crap to deal with. Not necessarily Toyota's fault, I guess, but technology seems to be getting less and less user-friendly as time goes by. Pretty soon, there won't be a way for the user to interfere in the least. You won't be able to turn ANYthing OFF!!

Mike Sweers thinks you should buy a Subaru if you wanna tote around mountain bikes.

This is a truck and should be used for manly truck things. They left the beeps and warnings there just to persuade you to buy that subaru

Which upright bike mount do you have? I tried swagman from Amazon but it’s a little wobbly for my tastes. Gets the job done but always on the lookout for improvements
