Sorry for asking a stupid question, but can 6112 shocks be adjusted while still on the truck using a spring compressor?

    thx

So it is remove, disassemble, move snap ring to desired level then reassemble and install?

I saw some guy rig up a spring compressor to be able to do it on the truck, but it looked sketchy as hell and I can't find the picture of it. Unless you are Macgyver, assume they need to be taken off the truck to adjust.

Other than needing to watch your fingers it doesn’t seem toooo unsafe the way you did it. You got a watch it when you have the shock off and that compressor slides off the spring. Then you’ve got a projectile.

Aren’t Bills snap rings outside of the coil buckets?
Mine were full coil overs and the spring was contained. I just compressed spring enough to take tension off of the collar so I could adjust the collar.

    Exactly.
A Bill with the snap ring I wouldn’t encourage. The distance the spring and bucket could travel is 5” down the shock.
Not as dangerous as a flying object off a bench, but more dangerous than my captured King coil moving 1/2”.

Yes I was! Started back during TTORA's delphiforum days in '99. Your username sounds familiar, but it's been awhile since I've visited TTORA's forum. Can't remember my password ever since they started requiring complicated passwords.

Cool!!! Yep, I was an old Delphi member too! LOL The Dick Foster days! :)
After going through a few Tacomas I flew down to Cali and bought Sean at TLT (Trails Less Traveled) Red S/C 4runner (Sean's writeup was the one everyone was using to run 35's on 3" lift). I had the 4runner for a decade and loved it - I wasn't on TTORA too much the past 6-8 years.

No on 4runner :( super sad about it.
I actually sold it the past year and replaced with the Tundra. It served many years as my hunting/wheeling rig - and it was more of a wheeling rig than anything. I planned on hunting different states soon and driving 600 miles+ one way on a supercharged beadlocked rig from the 90’s just didn’t seem as comfortable as a full sized rig lol.
Yep - Wslytoy (Wes) - Hytenor (Chris), showstop.
    Good times.

Bet you have some good memories with that 4Runner. Now to make some new ones with the Tundra. Mine is just going to do occasional mild wheeling with my boys. Most of the tight, wooded trails here in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas are perfect for jeeps and 1st gen Tacomas, but the Tundra's long wheelbase just seems too long for me to comfortably try them.

And yeah, how could I forget Hytenor, Wslytoy, and showstop?!

I have some stupid questions about the Bilstein 6112 coil overs.

Since the shock cylinder is larger than OEM in diameter, is there noise from the flexing of the coil hitting the larger diameter shock cylinder?

The Bilstein 6112s do not have boot covers over the shocks? Will they last as long as shocks with the boot covers?

On coil overs with an external reservoir connected with a hose to the shock cylinder, do I need larger than a 2” level to get enough clearance in the wheel well for the external cylinder? Are those coil overs made for 3 to 6 inch lifts and not 2” levels?

    Thanks for any responses.

Yep! Lots of great memories! It was the rig my kids would “drive” (aka steer) when we’d go to the Christmas Lights show that you drive through at night on the racetrack - both kids loved the damn thing. I wanted to pass down to the daughter, but she’s still 6 years out before she can drive.
Yep - Tundra is just too big for them small trails lol!
I did a few wheelin trips with some of the OR/WA TTORA guys way back in 2001 - good times! :D

My son could do the “I love what you do for me, Toyota!” Jump right after he learned to walk :D

There shouldn’t be any noise on coil to shock contact - if there is, that’s a problem.

Boot covers are a debate. Almost everyone will say they’re not needed. Unless you plan on doing a ton of high speed gravel runs where rocks can bounce up and hit the shock shafts. Even if they do, the shafts are still beefy and I’ve never seen one damaged due to not having boot covers.

No on the 3”-6” lift for reservoirs - 2” level they work fine.

Can you actually use the 6112 with a 3’ spacer kit and just adjust it at the lowest level? Or it defeats its purpose?
