A couple of weeks ago I purchased a 19 crewmax cement “blackout” edition. I was cleaning it yesterday and I noticed the Tundra badge looked like it was coming off a bit, upon closer examination it appears they just coverup the existing chrome badges with a black plastic overlay. Has anyone else noticed this or do other people actually have solid black badges?

I could be wrong but om not sure of a blackout edition. That could be something the dealership had done but true toyota black emblems are not over laying the chrome ones. I would ask the dealer to order the right ones. If they want to do it right they should have the first time.

Hmmm. Sounds like the dealership has been here on Tundras.com and dipped (Dip It) the emblems. Look up the Dip It subforum here.

It’s probably just the black emblem overlay kit. Dealer didn’t take the time to do it properly.

A new Tundra should have black OEM badges. I’m pretty positive the factory doesn’t use overlays. The dealership likely put those on there. Unless they stated that they were overlays, I’d make them put the OEM ones on.
Hopefully they’ll make it right, but I doubt they will. Dealerships are usually going to try and avoid doing anything for you after the sale. If they resist, move on to the following:

You’re going to get an email from Toyota for a customer satisfaction survey. You’ll almost definitely get a second email from the manager at the dealership, saying something to the effect of “You have received a satisfaction survey from Toyota. We hope you will give us perfect scores. If there is any reason you can’t do that, please let me know what we can do to change that.”

What most people don’t realize is that these surveys are very important to the dealerships. Car manufacturers send these out to people who buy their vehicles. Their overall ratings effect bonuses from the manufacturers, along with what vehicles are allotted to the dealership for sale. Anything other than 100% perfect surveys are considered as a fail.

Because of this, car buyers do still have power at the dealership until the survey has been completed. In my experience, and from hearing from others, a dealership is going to do anything reasonable to get that perfect score. I’ve seen them offer lifetime oil changes, car washes, etc to get buyers to rate them all 10’s. Back in the days when the surveys were mailed instead of electronic, dealerships would give customers gift cards if they would just bring it to them to fill out.

If you don’t get an email from the manager along with the survey, contact them directly. Tell them you’re getting ready to fill out the survey, but you’re just not happy with those overlays. I’m almost 100% sure you’ll get your OEM badges.

Yes I did at the time everything was great. They did everything I asked they even swapped the tube steps for predator steps. They may make this right for me I haven’t tried yet. I just wanted to make sure that they were all done like this.

I’m trying to post pictures but when I select upload a file top right corner of my phone shows a black box like its trying to upload but it doesn’t.

That’s actually a good thing. If you’d given them bad marks they’d probably tell you to pound sand.

That definitely looks like an overlay to me. It’s what mine look like. The sticker says “blackout package” which I’m almost positive means real black badges.

Call them up and ask if the blackout package means overlays or OEM black badges. If they say yes, they have to fix them. If they say no, call Toyota.
The only way you’re not getting this fixed is if we are all wrong and Toyota uses overlays on these packages.

I know right lol. We can all go through the window sticker and pick it apart on the exaggerated prices they charge that’s for sure. I will swing into the dealership in the next few days and talk to them. I will take the part numbers to the correct black badges first though.

There are black badges and there are black overlays. I have seen overlays at my local dealer. My guess is that these are done at the port or dealership, as opposed to the actual black badges that might be from the factory (Although I am not sure that there are any black-out factory options)
I would say most of the ones I have seen at the dealer were overlays. Nothing wrong with them; a lot of people have them - it is just unfortunate that OP's is coming off. Typically from what I understand the double sided tape used for those are 3M quality.
It is easy to tell them apart. The black badges will have sharp corners, similar to the OEM chrome ones, and the overlays are a little more rounded. Also, the SR5 badges have black inside the gaps (Between S and R and the inside of the R's loop)

I think is an overlay kit, they are not perfect by no means. But you will still see the tape even on the real dealimage.jpg

So out of curiosity, what all did you get that was “blacked out”.
My closest dealer has a lot of 19 Tundras blacked out and they have the 17 style TRD Pro wheels on them. image.jpg

From Dealer's website. They sell the blackout kit as the overlays, not black badges.

It’s really not a big deal, overlays are just fine. Might just ask them to straighten that one up.

Just the badges I-force, tundra, tailgate tundra and the black exhaust tip. Being “blacked” out wasn’t the selling point to me I liked the color and this is the only one they had. I actually went to buy a MGM one they had until I saw this one.

I agree 100% if they start to come off and I can’t get help from the dealership I will just debadge it. The others are perfect it’s just the tundra ones.

I see a lot more of them in MGM in my area and don’t see as many of the cement ones I liked that about the color.

Wow. $363 for a blackout overlay kit? They are about $130 on ebay. I had no idea there was an OEM version. I hope that the blackout package does more than blackout the emblems.

Mine had the same package (bought in TX). I debadged my whole truck. Looks like the top is a hard plastic black shell stuck on top of a chrome base.

I really like the black TUNDRA door emblems, I bought them for my Platinum. I’m taking the Platinum off the doors.

Worst case take them off and replace with the others, witch I might add are just painted from the factory.
