‘03 Tundra, blue paint fading on hood and roof. Rest of body is fine. 270k miles. Am thinking of spraying the hood and roof with black bed liner type spray. Thoughts?

Given it's only on the hood and roof, is there any reason you don't just cough up the meager cash to have a shop re-spray between the roof rail provisions and pop the hood to respray it, and call it a day?

@Rex Kramer did that to his truck. Looked good. Added a little weight to the hood.

It might look a little weird with just the roof and hood done. What about something like a flat black wrap?

Please don’t use bedliner spray, it looks horrible.

With the cost of paint these days, and most body shops around here not doing anything other than insurance work, it’s not cost effective in my budget.

I may not agree with @Elevatorguy on his hatred for toppers, but I wholeheartedly agree with this ^^. It's highly unusual for anyone to make coatings-as-paint look good on an entire vehicle, much less part of one. For the partials, I've only seen it once where it looks good on a mixed paint+coating setup, on an '84 VW Westfalia, where the bottom half was coated in a different color from the painted top half. I can't imagine the transition from glossy to bumpy is going to look good on hood and roof, but ... I'd need to see it to know for sure :D

    How bout wrapping it ?
Lasts about 5 years . . . lots of color options.
Always considered doing my roof in a lighter color for heat reduction when the clear coat goes south.
Bed liner often looks janky to me after a while . . . dirty / chalky.

I added a vinyl wrap to mine. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I like the look.

Sooooo figured I'd chime in....my hood was getting sunburnt AF from living in Tx before FL and VA..... don't mind the wife being a goof
    shenandoah.jpg

so I set out to fix the paint....it started with me picking up a camper shell that would be easier to paint than the one I had with better glass and the seller also had a spare hood that I could put on the beast while I stripped and painted the original.
    grey hood.jpg
After swapping hoods I started with the clear stripping gel they sell at autozone.....it does work better if its warm out, I did all of this in March, got frustrated with it taking too long and eventually used mechanical sanding (BIG MISTAKE) patience would be your friend here. I applied the gel with a paintbrush and let it set in the sun for an hour and then pressure washed it off.
    chem strip stage 1.jpg
    and again....
    chem strip stage 2.jpg
    and again....
    chem strip stage 3.jpg
and again until I got frustrated and used a wire wheel, followed by an orbital with multiple grit sanding pads
    mechanical and chem.jpg
Finally got fed up and decided it was good 'nuff and got the original paint color from a local body shop. So far I was in about $100 for the spare hood, 60ish for stripping gel and about 150 for the paint.
I then took the hood and the wet sanded camper shell to the booth I'm fortunate enough to have at work, if this had not been an option I would've drop sheeted my garage and done it in there. These were painted using harbor freight paint guns because we're cheap as shit at work.

and finally the finished product....the fender flares were toasted as well, I did those at a later date with rattlecan and 2k clear in the garage, I also stripped the old plasti-dip off the mirror caps and painted them at the same time.

Final thoughts were that this was not really economically viable had I not also painted the camper shell at the same time. It was definitely a learning experience and I'm very pleased with the result for my purposes (I want it to look good from 10 ft) I believe the full expense was in the neighborhood of $600 or so....If you just had to paint the hood, you could probably pull it, strip it and drop it off to a paint shop for a similar cost....the camper shell is what made it worth it for me.

Some beautiful Tundies here. My suggestion, just take it to a Maaco and have em paint it black. There's definitely value is doing it yourself and trusting the quality of work like @tacoguybill but if you're not paint-inclined just have someone else do it. I personally would never ever trust myself to paint anything. Anything.

Btw I bet Maaco doesn't care if it's an insurance job or not. Should only be a few hundred bucks.

Sadly, no maacos anywhere near me. I’ve done some paintwork in the past, so still might go that route.
    Nice work Taco!

Personally I can’t stand bad paint and body damage, and I lack spare time for things that I have no interest in doing myself.

I’d have it professionally painted or wrapped before I contemplate any other form of coating.

I’m guessing $900 - $1,200 for hood and roof recoat. Well worth it in my book. Have them blend to tops of the fenders.
