Blue coolant

    Trying to unfuck what the last owner did
    Just bought this truck a few weeks ago, I changed the oil, air filter, greased up the shaft points, fixed some body/tailgate damage in the rear. Just noticed the coolant is blue, is this a major issue? Should I flush the system out with red? this is my first Toyota so I'm trying to go OEM everywhere possible

    Yes, you should fully purge, flush with water a couple times, and load it up with pink long life, which is good for the next 100k miles. It should not have blue, yellow, green, orange, purple or any other color. More info for your new purchase and how to take care of it here.

    Distilled water!

    When I did this I drained the radiator and the block (PITA!), filled with distilled water, ran it for a while then drained. Refilled with water, ran it again, then drained. After the third cycle the drained water was clear enough for my liking (and patience) so I filled it up with 50/50 Pink and lived happily ever after!

    Blue is used for Hondas. I looked it up, and both Blue and Pink/Red AFs are similar formulations, more or less the same to a non-chemist like myself, so it would probably be OK in the long run. But I'm a bit AR about these things...it just bugged the shit out of me that it was Blue when it's supposed to be Red!

    I like and use PEAK OET extended life red/pink concentrate coolant for Asian vehicles. I also use the green in my Subaru. I called them and was told their red, green and blue are basically the same (for Asian vehicles) but they change the color so it looks like what is supposed to be in it.

    Now if you can believe it they state "Service life of up to 15 years/400,000 miles with a complete cooling system flush and fill". I wouldn't run it that long lol.

    Here's my issue with the OEM pink. It only comes as 50/50. That's okay if you have a completely empty system or you want to top off your overflow. But if you flush with distilled water and there's some left what are you going to wind up with. 40/60 or 30/70. Who knows.

    That's why I like the Peak concentrate. I shoot for 60/40. Just my 2 cents.
