Can someone please help? This is on a 2022 Tundra Limited. Why is it when my phone (samsung s22) is connected and being used for android auto, I can't make a phone call by pressing the speaking person on the steering wheel. I get a response saying "I didn't find any contacts in your phone book." I can, however, say "hey google" and make a call that way. Now if the phone is only used for media and phone I can press the same speaking person, say "call John Doe," and it will call John Doe. So I guess my question is why is the android auto not working in conjuction with the phone?

I don't know if I'll explain this well enough for you to understand but it goes something like this. When your phone is just connected via Bluetooth the headunit controls and has access your phone so the steering wheel controls work and will access your phones info. However, when connected via Android auto your headunit essentially becomes your phone so you have to us the phrase "hey Google"

Thanks. It's weird that Toyota is like this. I had an f150 prior to the Tundra and I didn't have to do that to call out using the steering wheel controls.

Congrats on the new truck. You'll definitely have a few things to get used to coming from a F150

I think this is the answer you’re looking for

One press activates the Toyota voice assistant and since the phone is connected via Android Auto, it isn’t using the Toyota phone app in the headunit.

What is the talk switch that activates the Google assistant, the talking person on the steering wheel?

You can actually just say "hey toyota" and then you can say a command. But same thing happens when I try calling someone, it just says it "did not find any contacts in the phone book".
How do you add contacts to the phonebook?
    Im using android auto

There is no need to add contacts to your phone book. When you use the phrase "hey Toyota" the headunit is searching for contacts with a Bluetooth connected device. However you are using Android auto so for lack of a better term the headunit becomes your phone so you have to use the phrase "hey Google" or whatever phrase you have your phone programmed to recognize. Also, as mentioned above when connected via Android auto you can also push and hold the talk button on the steering wheel controls to activate the Google assistant which will access your phones contact list.

In my experience when I use Android Auto, I go to Toyota app then music. It shows what I am playing but in a much nicer layout and without Waze on the screen. I almost always use Pandora but I lose the ability to rate songs this way. When I use it this way I can use the talk button to make calls. I assume this is Bluetooth mode but Android Auto icon is still available.

It will default back to the Android Auto screen when you restart ignition. I wish it wouldn't as this is my preferred setting.

I don't want to turn Android Auto off because I would lose Waze and the split screen. But the majority of my driving I don't need a map. It would be great if I could turn it on and off easily.

I dont know if it is any different with Apple Car play, but I dont know if it just dont work with android or if its not possible at all to call contacts using the "hey Toyota" command.
