This is perhaps a dumb/weird question...

I acquired a used trailer recently, which I'm tearing apart and rebuilding for a homebuilt camper project I've been dreaming about for a long time.

I wanted brakes, mainly because this will be towed in snow and ice conditions...so I got a 3.5K single axle with electric brakes. The wiring was funky so I've stripped it all and will be re-wiring brakes and lights from scratch. This isn't the problem, I've pretty comfortable with wiring.

But I have very little idea how to properly wire up the brakes on the TRUCK side of the equation. I've heard some conflicting advice about this.

The guy I bought the trailer from said that I probably have a hookup in the dash for a brake controller....or that there is one built in? He also said I should get on e-bay and find the right OEM brake controller for my truck? It was confusing. The previous owner also said something once that the truck was already wired for trailer brakes? There is a bunch of connectors and a flat four wiring plug in the back of the truck...I don't know what exactly is going on there. I've never towed with the truck before.

What I am asking, is if there is some existing tow brake controller that I need to figure out how to connect to my truck....or if I can just get a 'generic' brake controller, and wire it in to the dash, run wires to the back of the truck, and do it that way?

If it would help, I could post pictures of the wiring I've got under the truck.

Toyota put a 5 pin connector in the driver kick panel area to plug in a brake controller....Tekonsha for instance. However, they did not start doing that till the 03 MY.
It's something that you can do and as you know there's plenty folks here that can help with connectors, wiring diagrams....etc

    Here's a video for a 2002 install that might give you ideas....Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2002 Toyota Tundra Video | etrailer.com
