Had my 2022 tundra sr5 4x4 in shop as I had some steering wheel vibration while braking, thought it maybe needed balancing rotation. They informed me that my brakes are gone and need rotors turned. My truck has less than 20k mi. Cmon Toyota you’ve had brake issues on almost every gen.

Mine did the ante thing at 30k. Haven't figured out my replacement yet but it's bad on mountain highways. It's ridiculous that all other half tons get double or triple the life

Most likely rotors are warped, something very prevalent with my 08 when using OEM rotors. Switched over to Centric cryo'd and they last much longer. I'd check with the service manager and maybe since you only have 20k they'll do a warranty on it. Had my 08's warrantied at 15k, my service manager agreed that they should have lasted much longer especially since the pads were barely worn.

That’s is crazy. I’m not saying it’s you… but what are your braking habits? Aggressive braking, especially the last 20 feet? I’ve learned to lift the brake pedal and roll forward a foot or so after coming to a stop, but that usually is to deter rotor warping. OE brakes on my ‘13 went over 130k, and about half that on the second set of OE brakes with a lot more towing and hauling. No, I’m not trying to GenShame anyone; just saying that I would expect similar brake life from the 3rd Gen. I’ve seen similar reports from both gens of poor brake life, but I’m still surprised by a 20k brake service interval.

Do you use your auto cruise control a lot? There's been an increase in a lot of vehicles brakes wearing out prematurely from the auto cruise control constantly applying brakes. I hate that feature myself, so I always go with the constant speed option. The feature sounds good on paper, but it never works the way it should in every vehicle I've used it in. It's always way too sensitive on the brake pedal and takes forever to get back up to speed. The people that love it are people like my wife and daughter that are too focused on their phone, the radio, their make-up, etc to worry about driving.

I wouldn’t turn them. If they warped already, removing thermal mass from the heatsink will just make it warp faster on round two. Replace the rotors.

How you brake makes a huge difference. Many people's default driving style without realizing is tailgater and last second braker at lights or stop signs. I rarely keep my vehicles beyond 90k. I am not a tailgater/late braker and have not put pads or rotors on my primary driver in 30 years. My wife is and she gets new pads in every vehicle she has at least once in 90k miles

Unfortunately, the brakes on the Gen 3 are my biggest concern, so far. Mine got hot and began shuddering the whole truck while following a slower moving semi down a mountain pass using the adaptive cruise. The shuddering stopped when the brakes cooled down, but I'm sure there was damage done. I've concluded the adaptive cruise is far too aggressive on the brakes, so I've stopped using it when there is traffic around.

I don't understand above comments about brake problems on earlier Gen Tundras. I got great factory brake life out of my 2008 and 2015 Tundras. I fully expect to need new rotors and pads on my Gen 3 in under 40K miles. That's unacceptable to me.

I was looking at brakes last night for the Thundra. What is everyone else running that's had to replace them?

I was on my third set of brake pads and second set of rotors when I traded my 2016 Ram Ecodiesel for the Tundra. I bought it at 15k and traded in at 50k. Bought June 2019 and I worked from home during covid. First pad replacement was 20k, I don't remember the rest, but everyone agreed they were junk.

Mine went at 20k miles. Replaced rotors only online vendor left original pads which looked new. Brakes awesome now. Not a tail gater. I think the rotors just suck.

I'm at 32k on my my 22, and now on the third set of rotors. I almost never brake that hard, and use the adaptive cruise control quite often when on the highway. I'm probably 70/30 highway/city driving. I've only towed a few times, every time with a very light-duty utility trailer, maybe 1000lbs tops. At least it has been covered under warranty now both times, but kind of annoying to go through a full set of rotors every 15k miles or so. Seems like the rotors for this truck are severely undersized for the truck. If / when it happens again, I'll likely go aftermarket if the dealer won't cover replacing them a third time. I bought the 100k mile warranty on the truck only because it was the first year of a complete redesign, and when I bought the truck the wastegate issues were still going strong.

I was just noticing this on my 23 with 32k miles. I just assume that OEM rotors are usually junk. My 19 Ram had the same issue. I put vented rotors on it and they lasted a while. I will be changing mine out before I head out west for hunting in October. Anyone run vented rotors on their rigs?

Before anyone goes and spends $500 on new rotors and pads, why dont you try a bunch of repeated hard 60mph to 10mph stops. Do it 5x in a row back to back as quickly as possible and see if it cleans to rotors off.

Dont actually come to a complete stop, only drop to 10mph or so so that the rotors dont stop spinning in the pads and bake. Just for 60mph ->10mph -> back to 60 mph -> 10mph . . . repeat

I have always replaced factory Toyota pads with Akebono Ultra-Premium Ceramic brake pads bought from either Amazon or an authorized retailer. I always change out the factory rotors for a new rotors that is usually a better quality IMHO.

As has been noted in other threads as well as responses posted above - this is often a contributing factor to decreased pad and rotor life. Compare the factory rotors to other factory standard brake packages for other MFG’s and you will find the tundra's to be more robust that’s you think. Unless OE quality took a serious nosedive, Toyota rotors are typically top notch. They could also have a bad batch of parts, but your use case suggests it is how the parts are being used - not the parts themselves - that are the problem.

Adaptive cruise sounds shnazzy but I wish people would actually continue to drive their vehicles rather than be nannied around. The one time I’ve used adaptive cruise on another vehicle, it was a horrible experience. I became ‘that guy’ that couldn’t drive as it was constantly slowing down, speeding up, doing whatever it wanted EXCEPT for maintaining speed. And that was on a stretch of freeway that I can easily drive several hundred miles without ever touching the gas or brake using regular cruise control.

I agree. The only benefit active cruise has is keeping you at traffic speed, say in a heavily speed trap area.

that said, I find it entirely useless for anything else and have seen where the brake holding is rampant in other grands also. My buddy has had all 4 of his rotors changed twice on his sierra for this reason. He drives mostly highway and uses the active cruise all the time.

    drive your car.

I use adaptive cruise on my LX570 to draft semi's while I tow. It works nicely. Set the adaptive to 72 mph but then pull in behind a semi going 70mph and let the adaptive maintain the distance.

Just got my truck back from having the rotors changed out again, and the service advisor did tell me that the part number for the rotors apparently did change since my truck was made. They had quite a few of the 2022s coming back with warped rotors, or as they said "rotor runout way out of spec". He claimed that the earlier 2022s came with too thin of a rotor, which was causing them to warp quite easily, and that the newer trucks have come with "thicker" rotors that haven't been warping as badly. Maybe it's all B.S. but Toyota has been known to change parts like this when there are issues.

Its the oem brake pads that suck and cause shudder. Maybe the ceramic pads that just dont work well. Got the schudder around 10k miles without any heavy braking or towing.
Replaced brakes with oem rotor but used semi metallic pads. 30k miles later and no schudder.

The front rotors were updated as part of the TSB (T-SB-0043-24) for "Front Brake Squeal".

I recall when I bought my 2008 Tundra. The dealership had a display in the showroom touting their "heaviest duty in class" brakes. In my experience, those brakes lived up to their billing. My 2015 Tundra's brakes weren't as robust, but they still lasted a respectable time. These Gen 3 brakes appear to be a significant downgrade, unfortunately.

Centric’s chat tech told me he ‘cannot confirm nor deny’ any future product for the 3rd Gen Tundra. I do like their rotors, so I’m hoping they eventually release some.

I'm curious if anyone has had luck with warranty replacement of the front rotors?
I just put new tires on and had horrible shudder while braking on the way down from the mountains. There's no wobble from the tires that I can detect and I'll also double check torque on lug nuts.
Also, any newer recommendations on brake kits is appreciated. I have looked at the Detroit Axle kit from Amazon posted above.

pretty sure that would fall under 12mo/12k mile adjustment period only...Toyota has no way to know how you drive and a hard driver charging up to light after light or towing they can wear brakes out fairly quickly

I have successfully had it done 2x under warranty now. First around 18k, second at 34k. The first time, they claimed that Toyota required that they attempt to machine the rotors before they will pay to replace them under warranty. They then did machine all 4 rotors, only to end up replacing the front rotors after they test drove the truck. The second time, They ended up replacing all 4 rotors. Both the front and rear rotors had excessive runout, and since the rears were previously machined, they had no choice but to replace them. They did point out to me the second time, that the rotors were replaced by a newer part number then what came on the truck, and when I looked up that part number it was apparently to fix the low speed squeal the breaks made since day 1. It's now been about 4k miles since the last time they were replaced and they still feel smooth as the day they were put on. But long story short, they did replace them 2x under the basic 36k warranty at no cost to me. I do have the 100k factory warranty, not sure if that made a difference there or not though.

This is encouraging. I've got a trip into the mountains this weekend. If it happens again, I'll try the dealer route first. I found a Power Stop kit that I can install if the dealer doesn't come through.

Interesting, at almost 10k miles now, no noise so maybe that's why ?!
