Hey guys, where is everyone attaching there break away cable on their trucks? Drove big boy trucks at work they had a separate eye bolt I believe. Where do you put it on your tundra?

I attach mine to a little carabiner that I put in the chain hook.

I attach it directly to the truck receiver hitch safety hooks with a carabiner. If the hitch and or safety chains fail, the trailer breakaway needs to work. If it’s attached to any part of the trailer hitch components, it may not get activated.

On my '00 I drilled and attached a seperate eye bolt. (I've yet to do that on the '19)

Technically it's supposed to be attached somewhere other than your hitch, since if your whole hitch w/safety chains gets ripped off and your breakaway is attached to that it won't be activated.

That’s what I thought. I’ve been attaching it to just the chain hooks but I don’t think it’s fully correct

    Lots of stuff!
I connect mine to one of my hooks. I do see the logic in a completely separate connection! Then it is good to check the connections of the hitch to the truck and make sure that the bolts are there and still tight.

There was a thread in the Airstream forum where the trailer rolled away when the hitch rusted out and basically fell off the tow vehicle. That is just someone not taking a moment to have a look at the hitch condition!

For our newer trucks we will probably need a few years before the rust eats the hitch and surrounding materials :)

If you are using a weight distribution hitch, that should help to keep the ball and coupler together..

Looks like the payload and safety police are slacking!

I was talking to one guy with a lot of towing miles about it and he figures if you're going to have a problem with the way things are hitched up, it's going to happen early in the trip. So he recommends stopping after about 20 minutes and checking everything over.

if the hook comes off, no emergency braking will activate.

That's my MO. 10 miles to the interstate and 9.something to the BP station on the right. Tire and bearing heat, any tiedowns and hitch integrity.

A far as the emergency brake cable goes, a clip a bit more secure than the faux carabiners is snapped on the cable loop then pushed through the safety chain elongated hole on the Tundra hitch. Then snap it on the cable itself. If the hitch falls off the truck I have real problems and my annual inspection isn't working.

Terrifying, probably extremely uncommon, but it makes sense and takes not much effort to mitigate

Thanks for posting this. I am hooked up and ready to go camping in a few days. Of course, my breakaway cable is hooked up like most people do. On my way out to the shop now to find an alternate location.

Yeah but that was a Chevy.:anonymous:. I'll look for a different attachment point but I don't think my license plate mount is up to the job.

Without a washer/nut on the backside, no. Otherwise, yes. Give it a test and see what works for you. Always a big believer in "prove it" adoption.
