    Hello:

The timing belt on 2001 4.7 broke as I was pulling up to a stop light. Took a chance and changed it out. Truck runs great!

A few other non-VVTi folks have had theirs break at under 1k-1.5k RPM and been OK. Congrats.

You changed it at the light? Impressive.

How many miles did you have on it?

Stay in your house all day and don't leave! You've just depleted a large portion of your allotted life luck.

    Glad it worked out.

Yes, how many miles on the timing belt? Do you have any photos of it or do you know if it was a Mitsuboshi timing belt?

Definitely not the first I've heard of this happening on the 4.7L.

Yep, seems that the 4.7 (all versions, including VVTi) is only an interference engine under some specific conditions, and not always a boat anchor if the belt fails.
Makes me wonder how many trucks have been scrapped just because someone told them their engine was toast…

Yep. Not even close. Actually, I've heard of fewer where the engine was destroyed. A lot of people on the Facebook page said they threw a new belt on and theirs was fine. I still don't want to risk it.

Saw another success story online today. So I'm slapping it in here, since it's related.

Heres one I saw today on another group. Allegedly had 220k miles on this belt.

I personally know 2 people with non VVTI’s that broke a belt and didn’t have engine failure.

    Note; all 2UZ’s are interference.

The timing belt on my neighbor's 2004 Tundra 4.7 broke after 229K miles. He took it to a shop and they said it was an interference engine and would cost $3K to fix. He replaced the belt watching a Utube video and now it runs fine.

I'm surprised the water pump held up that long. That's nuts.

I sold my 2000 Tundra when it had 175K miles on it. The buyer asked if I had replaced the timing belt. I thought it had a timing chain, LOL.
