So I've been looking for a pre '22 model for a bit now. Ive missed out on a few that I really wanted, looked at some that I said meh, then felt like I missed out when they sold. Saw a '22 with 40k miles on it. One owner, regular service. It hasn't had the fuel line or the engine recall done to it yet (of course). Is it a bad idea to consider this one? I assume I can't get a extended warranty on it because its outside the 3/36. Doesn't appear to be toyota certified at all either, and its at a toyota dealership. Price is about the same as a 2021 with similar miles. On the one hand it will be getting a brand new engine at some point. But ripping the truck apart to drop a new engine in, idk.
I have a 2012 4runner with 210k miles on it, so one of main goals of looking at 2.5 gen tundra is getting another reliable vehicle. Im not desperate to buy right now, but am getting a bummed out looking for what I want and missing out on them. This one is pretty close to what I'm looking for other than it being the first model year with a bunch of bugs.

You will get a lot of “advice” to stay away from the 3rd gen but do what you feel comfortable with. Honestly as much as trucks cost, patience is the best path since you aren’t in a hurry. And always hedge your bet with certified or extended warranty.

    What’s wrong with stock?
I bought a ‘22 new and have enjoyed it for the past two plus years of ownership. I could have bought a Gen 2.5 for a bit less at the time, but wanted the new features. I’m glad I did. The ride is great, the power satisfying the issues well, nonexistent. Yeah it has a recall on the fuel line, so what, It’s fixable and Toyota has addressed the issue. The motor, again, Toyota has stepped up to the plate and will do the right thing. Those are the main issues (oh yeah the second key fob) that I would worry about.

Not sure if your worry about getting an extended warranty is valid. The main concerns are already addressed by Toyota. I don’t have an extended warranty and am not contemplating getting one. Toyota is known for their reliability. I don’t have to tell you that, you already know that having a 2012. I also have a 2001 4Runner with 240,000 on the clock going strong. Other than regular maintenance I have probably spent $3,000 on repairs since we got it new. That’s all in 25 years. Truck still looks and runs strong. The key to the longevity is maintenance not repair.

How much are they asking for that used one? What trim level? Depending on where you are, there are deals to be had on 2024, to the tune of 10k off of TSRP. You may be able to stretch your budget a bit and just get a brand new unit. Just something to consider.

The trim level, mileage, and price you have been quoted will definitely help with your question. However, as already mentioned above this is all about what you think not anyone else. I left my 2017 (2.5 gen) for a brand new 22 and don't regret it one second. Looks, power, ride, tech, all much better than the 2.5 Gen in my mind

    Lots of stuff!
Come and buy mine, you can have the rest of my 7 year premium warranty as well. :)

And in a few months a fresh engine to boot! Hard to go wrong with a guaranteed new engine. You will get a good deal on the 22's and have less to worry about with the new engine being updated to 2025 updates!

You wanna buy a first year new model with well known and manufacturer acknowledged fuel line, engine, and turbo catastrophic failures, before any recall or warranty work has been done on it, and without an extended warranty? Why not just wait and find one that's had all the recall/TSB/defect fixing/whatever done already and pay a deep discount if you're stuck on a '22??

Are all of the 2022s subject to the engine recall? if not I would have the dealer throw in an extended warranty, unless you want to spend 30K for a new engine.

I'd ask Gen2 owners on their forum and see what they think.

    Lol

I figure the fuel line recall would be taken care of, kind of surprised they didn’t just do that by default. Or maybe they did and it wasn’t in the carfax.

Yes they are except for hybrids. That truck will get a new engine regardless of who owns it.

All I can say is if they offer you a "vehicle service agreement" just pass on that. I've had Toyota back out and say "that isn't covered" on a bumper to bumper platinum VSA several times and they don't even refund the cost of the damn VSA. I love my truck but the dealers suck the fattest part straight to the moon.

I would wait and get a used truck that is sorted out (a 2022 with a new engine at about 30-40k on it would be nice) or just make a deal for a new truck. The lots are over flowing right now with trucks.

unless the price is a steal by $1000's take the 1.9 for 72 and a steep discount on a new 24 avoid the hassle tax too hopefully

Personally, when I bought my '22 used it came down to price. I knew my budget and a new '23/'24 was not an option considering the minimum features that I wanted(crew cab, softex, 14inch screen). Not everyone can justify getting a new truck even with the discounts off of MSRP. I found mine at what i considered a steal of a price and jumped on it. I don't have any regrets. However... I bought mine with 15k on it and later bought the premium warranty. Also, this was before the engine recall. Not that I care about it now as i love my truck and have had zero issues. Plus I am a little excited for a new engine. So my advise would be to do your research. Figure out what exactly you want to have in the truck and the price point then shop for deals. I would recommend getting something inside the 3/36 and grab a premium warranty. Even if you buy a 2022, the recall is already there.. if the engine blows, you are covered.

Yeah I think getting one that is able to be put under warranty would be the best way to go for a 2022/2023.
I’m just a sucker for army green tundras. Just missed out on a 2021. Have been bummed ever since.

New is not in the cards right now so looking for used.

Have you test drove a 3rd gen yet? Night and day difference between a 2.5 gen.

No I have not. TBH I haven’t driven a 2.5 either. I have a F-350 so I would imagine either are a better ride than that.

I would recommend test driving both. The 2.5 gen has a lazy trans for me. The 10 speed and twin turbos make the 3rd gen a pretty fun ride.

MY 2022 Hybrid has not been recalled for the engine, nor has my neighbours Limited . Fuel tube yes, was an easy fix, and no idea what the Turbo catastophic failure posted above is all about but my turbos spin along just fine 2 years later.

    Would buy another tomorrow

I think the turbo issue was sorted out early on. There might be the odd one but not a plaguing issue now.

When I got mine in Oct 2022, these failure frequencies had been dropping off dramatically. I am sure there are still some failures but the lions share have stopped. I think it was a change in the parts that made the difference.

The OP's question was rather specific and I found the ignorance of potential turbo issues to be misleading, especially on a '22 on which no repair/recall/parts change etc. has been done. Glad yours are running fine, good for you, but OP's post is calling for public opinion and I found mentioning the issues to be relevant. I've only been casually following the 3rd gen saga though so maybe I've missed a few things in the truck's development regarding fixing failures.

To theorize on the turbo failures is pretty tough. The reality is that in a few months the the 22's and some 23's will be getting a complete engine with new turbos and new bearings, etc...

The way I look at is that the new engine will get these trucks up to current build quality which should be similar to the 24's and even early 25's.

Warranty aside, the 22's do offer a get savings and with the new engine, they should be less troublesome!

I'm selling my 2022 TRD Pro (Solar Octane) and it's been a true blast to drive/own and I have zero complaints. The only issues that I have had are the standard cracked seat panel (no issues after replacement to beefier design), the fuel line recall (no big deal), and got a new set of tires and an alignment for free from Toyota as they changed the alignment specs after seeing too many improperly worn tires.

Only reason that I am selling is to get the 2025 TRD Pro color as I fell in love with it the second I saw it.

As mine is a hybrid, it doesn't have the engine recall. If I could go back and do it again, I would not hesitate one bit. Remember that forums are frequently going to focus on and magnify the negatives. There are more positive stories out there, they just don't get the same attention.

I wouldn't hesitate if it's what you want & you get a good deal. Toyota is very thorough on what they do, & if you get a brand new engine down the road then the truck will be 1/2 new again.
