I’m about to trade my 2nd gen Titan PR in for a Tundra Platnum because I need more tow capacity for my camper. I want to know how you feel about losing the 5.6l V8 to a 3.5l V6? Any other observations about moving from the Titan to the Tundra too. The Titian is an unsung hero that doesn’t deserve the bashing it gets. I want to know if there is anything you miss about your Titan?

What's the tow capacity of your Titan?

Op, you’ll run out of payload before you run out of towing capacity. Both Titan and Tundra have payload stickers of 1400-1500 lbs. I actually went from a 2.5 gen tundra to a 2021 Titan XD to get my payload need.

While I dont have direct experience with the V6 in the tundra, the difference in low end grunt is significant. 479 ft-lbs at 2400 rpm vs 394 at 4000 rpm. The tundra should tow much more casually and at lower rpms.

and if you start towing at higher elevations the difference will be even more dramatic.

I drove a Infiniti QX80 as a rental from Boston to East Japeepee PA and the 5.6L lacked in the “grunt” department compared to my 2014 F150 Ecoboost at 6500’ of elevation where I live.

But as stated, the Tundra lacks in the payload department which is usually the limitation for towing in half ton trucks

The Tundra is rated to tow 2000lbs more. Honestly if the 5.6L V8 and 9200lb towing capacity isn't cutting it in the Titan then I'd consider stepping up to the Titan XD or American HD. I don't feel the extra towing capacity of the 3rd gen Tundra is enough of a step up and difference to make the change worth it.

I’ve thought of the XD, but we he box is too big and the MPGs are worse than the standard Titan. The MPG in the Tundra is also attractive.

Both of mine are first gens, but in the tundra i miss the low rpm cruising and interior room the titan has. The tundra feels cramped going from one to the other, but after a couple days i dont even notice.

in the titan i miss the sedan smooth ride of the tundra. Old shocks, worn bushings, and tired springs just float over ripples in the road, that i feel in the titan. Even though the titan has over twice as many miles.

You need an astrick in here *MPG for gas engines. I agree with the others. All new Tundra shines the most in towing vs. others. But your playing with the very upper end of a tow capacity. Most folks who give tow reviews (Like TFL doing their IKE challenges) state about 9,500-10,00 is the max they'd ever tow in a 1/2 ton. If your going to constantly pull round 9,000 and up they normally recommend a 3/4 or 1 ton.

I traded a 19 Titan for the Tundra. The Titan was the only vehicle I have ever owned that was 100% problem free the whole time I owned it; I'm missing that for sure! Otherwise, everything about the Tundra is better, in my opinion. The ride, technology, driving, etc. I don't notice any difference in power and a marginal difference in fuel economy, at best, with Tundra being slightly better. In all fairness though, I haven't taken the Tundra on any long highway trips. Most of my driving is country roads or a few miles on multi-lane roads at 65.

I use the maps and guidance quite a bit and the Tundra is 100 times better all around in the infotainment screen/functionality.

HD Payload Package F150 is another option. It will get better MPG than the Titan XD while having ~2400-2500 lbs of payload in a crew cab 4x4. It also has a 14000 lb tow rating, which it can actually take advantage of due to the payload being in the mid-2000's, although you still gotta watch the tongue weight rating.

The only issue is you have to get a 6.5' bed with the crew cab and you are limited to an XLT trim. And its probably going to require a special order.

But if you really want a truck with half ton mileage and more real world capability than your Titan, the HD Payload F150 is it. No one else makes anything like it.

Betting OP’s Titan and the Tundra Platinum end up pretty close in real world tow ratings if he works off the door jamb stickers.

I am going off the Titan’s door jam sticker. 9200 lbs for my PR. If I go down to an SL the tow capacity gets better. An S model Titan can tow 9800lbs that’s a base two door 4x2.
So here is the issue, and you all are going to say I’m crazy for this. My travel trailer is 6200lbs dry. Loaded with people in the truck, gear in the camper and gear in the truck, I get a total tow weight of about 7500lbs. That pushes me just over the recommended wiggle room you should have for towing a camper. (The GVW of the Camper is 9600lbs which just means the axles can handle 9600lb). The Tundra can handle 11050 according to the door jamb sticker. That little bit gives me the extra wiggle room peace of mind I was looking for without having to buy a Ford, GM or Chevy HD(have heard horror stories on their quality and lack of support from the manufacturers) or a Titan XD. Thr XDs box is too big anyway. I don’t kneed a 6.5 ft bed.
Anyway. That is the reason I’m looking at the Tundra. The bonus is the tow tech in the Tundra is better than the Titan. I honestly don’t have any complaints with the Titan. I just want the peace of mind in the Tundras tow capacity.

At 7500 lbs, your hitch weight is at least 800 lbs and probably more like 900 lbs. Add your weight and other passengers, the weight of anything else in the bed, and the wdh hitch weight and you’ll be at or exceeding the payload of either the tundra or titan. Payload is the limiting factor, not towing capacity.

    it is actually 600lbd

that said. I just put a deposit on platnum with the advanced package and power running boards and I paid below MSRP for it.

Dry maybe. Wet, with propane and batteries and everything, the tongue is probably in the 900’s

I have a sway control/weight-distribution hitch, so theoretically that will bring down the tongue weight since you are spreading the weight more evenly across both axles.

Yes, the WD hitch distributes the weight between the axles, but it still all counts toward payload. A small amount of the tongue weight might be transferred back to the trailer axles, but if so, it's typically only about 10% of the total tongue weight.

7500LBS is including gear in the camper, the camper itself and passengers in the truck. I do not drive with any of the tanks full since I mostly go to full hookup sites. I am kind of a nazi when it comes to packing for a trip.
