There was a thread very recently (haven't found it again yet) where someone had a cam sensor code and it ended up being a broken timing belt. If you're unsure of the last time it was changed it would be good to take a look.

Our 2UZ engines have only one camshaft position sensor, located on drivers side.

With the advent of the VVT-i for 05/06, one of the new features added was 2 VVT sensors(Bank 1/2) to assist with valve timing. The P0345 code is related to passenger side VVT sensor located between coils 4/6 Bank 2 as noted in pic below.

thank you everyone and bubbaw thank you for letting me know it was the vvt sensor i took it out and it was straight up shattered inside and i checked the oil later and saw a bunch of metal in it
i called my mechanic up and he said somehow it broke and that the entire passenger side of the engine is basically ruined and not firing properly so i will need a rebuild but thanks for all the help

Hey BubbaW, while your assistance was aimed at helping BlueJayy with his specific issue, it has helped me greatly as I am experiencing a single thud/click from the starter with codes P0340 / P0345. When buying replacement parts from RockAuto, they listed the VVT sensors you pointed out as camshaft position sensors. I bought all three (including the sensor inside timing cover) due having 230K on my 2UZ-FE. With that I thank you & those that take time to assist those in need. I'll be creating a thread soon that deals with addressing my specific issue. (Of course only after I've thoroughly checked the site). Thanks.

Hey Jimmy, not sure if you are replying to me or not but just in case, I'll be more than happy to share what I've learned lately. Short A. The Part #'s will be different since they are completely different sensors...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Read on for more. Leave for less. When I called in & I tried to order replacement sensors (the 2 under the Fuel Rails) from a Toyota Dealership Parts Dept. I referred to them as VVT Sensors. I was provided w/ Part #'s for the 2 VVT Sensors (oil) located at the front of the engine right behind & slightly above the timing belt covers. When I informed them that the images posted on their site are different than the ones I needed, I was provided with different Part #'s for them & the invoice says - Camshaft Position Sensors. All in all, there is 1 Camshaft Position Sensor Assembly w/ 10" wire & connector located in Bank 1 (Left) under the Timming Cover. There are 2 Camshaft Position Sensors (some call them - VVT) located under the Fuel Rails. And there's the 2 VVT Sensors. .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................No matter what they are called, they are completely different sensors. With that, before ordering replacements - visually inspect what's in hand including the OE interchangeable Part #'s with what they are selling. Hopefully this info will also assist others w/ Codes - P0340 & P0345. Have a good one. *(What Codes did you pull? Do you have a 4.7L DC?)

Hi, just noticed your update. In order to obtain the correct Part #' for your specific vehicle I'd first visit a Toyota Dealership's Parts Dept. Provide the VIN and they'll pull up what your VIN requires. No matter who you deal with start with your VIN #.

You are welcome. Tip, when replacing the 2 sensors located between cylinders (#5 & #7 on the Left side / Bank 1) and (#4 & #6 on the Right side / Bank 2) you don't have to remove the Fuel Rails on the 4.7 2UZ-FE engines. It's a very tight fit but you can twist them just right & they'll come right out & drop in. The 10mm bolt is a 10-minute bolt you can only reach w/ a small open-end wrench so take your time & have a magnet ready to assist if you drop it. Have a good one.

For my '06 V8/4WD both parts are same, 90919-05024 (that links direct to Toyota, where you can order at a discount for dealership pickup, and you can verify fitment using your VIN - please check your VIN/compatibility on your own, or by calling any dealership parts dept and asking). I see it available on scAmazon and fleaBay which I guarantee will be knockoff/counterfeit parts.

However, if you're smart and can wait a few days, you'll buy this part from Denso on Summit Racing, who is OEM supplier of that specific part. You'll pay 40% less. You need one for each bank.

Anyone reading this in the future: For 2004 and earlier, this part number is probably not correct for you. Use the parts finder sticky thread to locate the correct part for your non-VVTi truck.

Hey Shifty, really appreciate the info & links. I was hoping you or Bubba would be able to assist here. Thanks again, have a good one.................................................Note: He originally inquired about all of the Sensors (except for the Knocks). To clarify - the 2 Sensors you Linked to are indeed the same exact Sensors (can be installed on either Bank). The 2 Sensors located at the top of & slightly behind the Timing Covers are completely different Sensors (all being associated w/ the VVT). *in closing, anyone seeking to buy Denso Knock Sensors will learn that Denso stopped manufacturing them according to the folks over at Sparkplugs.com

You are welcome. Not certain about the testing method (Youtube will have some clips on that procedure). *If you pulled the Codes listed above, it's definitely a sign that the Sensor located on Bank 2 is failing. (in some cases it's the wiring harness, the connection and/or bad grounding). I removed & replaced both at the same time simply due to it being a 2005 with 232K. In my case, the one located on Bank 1 was stained with a brownish colored swirl around the silver part while the other one looked perfect.

Wait, you're buying these expensive ass parts without reading the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for testing the sensor, and actually testing it? That's f'n crazy! You hate your wallet that much eh?

If you are reading this and you don't have a copy of the FSM for your truck, it's readily available online. If you haven't grabbed a copy, links are in the community megathread sticky. Get off your ass, stop what you're doing and go download a copy.

Inside the FSM there is some great info. Let me copy/paste some of it. Note the last image, which is from SF-78, which is how to test the resistance across the sensor, although the charts below will give other details about expected operations.

Hey Shifty. Thanks for taking time to post this info. *Thankfully, I was able to test my VVT wiring harness without removing anything. I started printing out hard copies of anything to do with 2UZ-FE & keeping a folder in the cab. And, Bookmarking my devices is a must. Yes indeed. Folks would be wise to Test prior to simply ordering & hoping. Thanks again.
