We ordered a Lance 2285 new 2021 camper. We need to get a tow vehicle. We really like the Tundra. Specs for the Lance are: dry wt 4930, GVWR 7000, hitch weight (hauled wt) 635, cargo capacity 2070. We are looking at the SR5. Do you think we can tow the Lance with the SR5? Thanx.

Depends on how much you plan to take with you. For 1/2 ton trucks you need to pay attention to payload vs tow capacity. You will run out of payload long before you reach the tow capacity. Anyway, the tongue weight is not bad on that trailer. Add in about 100 lbs for the WDH and add in whatever you will be hauling in the cab and bed, not to mention what additional weight you may add to the camper- compare that to the payload sticker on the driver side door of the truck you are considering.

Generally, Tundras can have a payload between 1100 and 1300ish lbs, so you do have some wiggle room with that camper weight. Lower trim double cabs have the highest payload numbers, crewmax and higher trims will have less payload due to the addition weight of the big cab and the higher trim accessories/add ons.

So, short answer is yes but it depends on what else you are loading in the camper and truck. If you are going to haul a 500lb ATV in the bed while towing- you could be overloaded once you add people, luggage, etc Make sense?

The one heavy accessory that it would be worthwhile to have if you're towing is the 38 gallon fuel tank.

I'm guessing you will be over with supplies, people etc), propane tanks, water tanks (if you prefill).

Trailer sites always underweigh there trailers to sell them to people with mini cans and 1/4 tons. Take it for a test run and hit up a weigh station.

It's similar to getting a dog at the shelter. When you ask how big the dog will get it's always 40-45 lbs and they always end up being 60-70. Easier to get rid of a 40lb dog then a 65lb one. Easier to sell a 4500lb trailer than a 5500lb.

Yes you can... I have a 19 pro with a weight distribution hitch and airbags... our lance 2285 is a 2020 model.. I tow without water when possible..

we have over a dozen trips on this setup.. from 8K elevation to sea level.. (over 12 years towing with various tundras)... watch your payload, and keep it within the speed limit..

This is my 2018 Lance 2375 hooked to my 2018 Platinum 4WD. With WDH and Sway Control it tows very well. I also got the Truck weighed back in July with myself (210), my wife(140lbs) ,full gas tank. I have an after-market spray-in liner (30ish lbs?), Rear TRD Sway (30 lbs), Tyger StarArmor steps (120 lbs). You can see the receipt from the scale below.

After we purchased the Lance, we drove it right through the scales on the way home. Same set up with the me and the wife, but I also had about 300lbs of tools an extra WDH, and mudflap the seller gave me in the bed. None of that 300lbs is there when I tow. As you can see from the scale receipt, we were 120lbs over on payload, but we will have about 180 lbs to spare without the tolls and extras in the bed. The Lance had a full fresh water tank(40 gallons) and all our stuff inside.

I definitely know it is there and live where it is very hilly, but we average about 9.2 towing it up and down hills on the highway between 65 and 75mph. If I stay 65-70, we get just over 10mpg. In any event the Tundra handles this load just fine, and within specs.

My boat scaled at 4650 without hitch weight and tows fine. It has a fairly high profile but not the wind resistance you will have with TT. You might need some helper springs or air bags but I don't. Even with the front leveled I don't notice the nose up.

15CCC9E7-AF1C-44FB-9C24-E87B4003BF00.jpg We tow our 2020 Lance 2285 with our 2019 Tundra Platinum. All I can tell you, compared to our 18’ Jayco hybrid, you definitely know the Lance is back there but IMO Toyota “overbuilt” the Tundra since the 2007 redesign. The 5.7 is a beast, the brakes are massive, the brake controller works fine and as long as you get a good (Equalizer or better) WDH and it is set up properly then you are going to be fine with this combo of travel trailer and tow vehicle. ENJOY!
