It was mentioned the other day.
That is a lot of money to spend on making your oil changes far messier.

There are lots of YT videos about this. And one video I watched claims that the spin on filters are much cheaper than the cartridge filters. I've not yet had to change the cartridge filter, but in the videos, the cartridge filters certainly look like a big mess to me, as opposed to a spin on filter, in which the oil is mostly contained in the filter when you remove it. When my next oil change rolls around, I'm going to take hard look at doing this, along with a ValveOmax.

There's a valve on the bottom of the canister that allows you to drain it before twisting it off. Using a nice little twist valve from Motivx allows you to drain it right into a pan, no mess whatsoever. Spin filter, not so much.

The OEM cartridge filter is $5.
Spin off oil filter certainly don’t contain all the oil in the filter. On the Tundra it would be straight down which is better but you certainly will get a decent amount of overflow. Side mounted are even worse.
The canister you can buy the expensive fancy drain tube or buy a 3 foot piece of $100 tubing and use the OEM drain valve. Pop the hose in an empty oil jug and then the valve in the canister housing. You won’t have but a drip or 2 to clean up.
Certainly not worth $200 for the adapter.

Keep in mind that a spin on contains the bypass valve. Not always the most accurate valve being that it’s disposable. The cartridge style oil filter has the bypass in the housing. One would think that it is built better since it is meant to operate for the life of the engine. Just my $.02’s

I just watched a video of a toyota cartridge filter being changed. Wow, what a pain. Take off little drain cover. Let oil drip out for a minute. Push in the plastic drain attachment and let that oil drain somewhere. Unscrew filter housing and wait for that oil to drain. Remove oil soaked filter media and replace with new media. Replace main o-ring and screw housing back on engine. Replace small o-ring then replace drain cover. Compare this to a screw on replacement: unscrew filter, dump oil that is contained in the filter where you want it. Put some oil on new filter gasket. Screw on new oil filter. Anyone who says a canister change is faster or less messy than a screw on filter has obviously not done it or seen it done.

I have changed many screw on oil filters, and if I was the one who put them on, then I can usually take them off by hand. The folks at that other Tundra forum seem to have more interest in this. Some have even run remote lines to put the oil filter on top of the engine. I personally think it is worth $200 for anyone changing oil regularly, but that is a personal decision. I do find it amusing that some of these folks, who surely have spent thousands on lifts, wheels, rims, painted fenders and whatnot think that this $200 is just too much for what it does.

I'm definitely looking into this hard. Just changed my oil the other day, I have to change it 3 times a year, and its always a mess.with the cartridge. Too many steps, oil everywhere and running down my arm, then having to use half a can of brake cleaner to clean up the cartridge to my liking. On my 7.3 I unscrew the filter some, let the oil drain for a minute or two, then grab the filter with a shop towel and unscrew it, lube the new filter gasket and screw it on. So much easier and cleaner.

And, if you buy a nice wrench, drain attachment with hose, and metal cartridge housing to replace the stock plastic one, you've spent about $100 already.

This. Or drain it directly into an old 5qt oil jug from the last oil change and you dont even need to empty/clean the pan! Combined with a fumoto valve, you can retire your old oil change pan!

I personally don't have any problem or mess changing the cartridge, It took like ten minutes after dealing with the dreaded skid plate. If you really hate it so much, you should definitely buy one, then come back and give us a review of the product.
