Just purchased a 23 Capstone, the first time over 65mph and I’m getting vibration. The passenger seat 1” back and forth rapid, liquid in drink cups resembles an earthquake. Towed a flat 2100lb trailer to Dallas from Houston and it got worse. Put a 4Klb car on it on way back and it was unbearable. I had to pull over twice. I just traded a 21 Land Rover Defender and it ate 1300 mile trips with 18 hours of driving no issues. I’ve had F150 platinum and FXT and Frontiers, and a 2014 Tacoma and don’t remember vibrating like this, pitch and roll yes. Maybe I’m getting old. Is it the 22” wheels? Sitting at 67mph I’m also only achieving 17.8mpg on a 50 mile run empty load.

Did you test drive it at freeway speeds?

Unfortunately not. The dealership was a compete cluster, spent 2.5 hours waiting to test drive then it was only to end of street and back as they only had that one truck the other one was being cleaned. I’ve spoken to neighbors with 1794s and they say it’s a very smooth riding truck.
The one I test drove and put a deposit on wasn’t there when I returned later to do paperwork. Switch and bait or unorganized I don’t know but ran out of time back and forthing..

Obviously not normal. Get that back to dealership and get it taken care of. Those Capstones should ride perfectly smooth.

Just a guess but could be one or more tires are out of balance and lost balancing weights or bad tire all together. The ones that come with the truck from factory are crapola.

Sounds like more than out of balance to me.
Maybe a bent rim or belt issue.
In any case, it’s back to the dealer.

    Is the steering wheel steady?
Occam’s Razor. I’d have the dealer pull the rear wheels to check for run out or a separation on a tire.

Since the Capstone has 22" wheels and fairly low profile tires from the factory, it is very easy to bend a wheel. It wouldn't take much and might not be visible on the outside or could be on the inside.

Everything is covered for first 12 months 12000 miles. Even front end alignments. Agree with others who said out of balance wheel or tire. Most tire vibrations show up between 62 and 75mph.

If you keep your speed at 70 or below you can get 19-20. Over 70 it starts dropping. 75-80 I get 17mpg in a non hybrid. You may get better.

I took it back the Monday following the Friday I purchased it 100 miles in back to the Dealer Mike Calvert Toyota Houston. They kept it for two days and said Lead Tech had driven in 10 minutes (Downtown location) and that’s how trucks drive. I returned later that week and they kept it Thursday, Friday, I picked up still the same. Advised they’d undertaken an alignment and wheel balancing. I asked to see the data and they admitted they hadn’t done anything. Saturday it went back for another three hours told it was a flat tire which was 2 weeks out so they swapped a wheel from another truck I driver a 3K mile trip with a trailer and it was miserable. Let alone the 50+ attempts to open the fuel cap to n the trip. Shaking increased dramatically and 7mpg towing 6000lbs along i10 at 67mph on cruise control.
Just went back in for a further 5 days and being told it’s normal. I’m now with Toyota and waiting for a Field Engineer to take a look. I’ve advised it’s not going back to Mike Calvert as they have no idea. I suggested checking shaft for balance and got a blank expression from Lead Tech and Service Director who actually asked what that was.

I’ve been waiting a long time to sink $80K into a truck. New issues this week is the screen constantly asks for a password very 10 minutes, returns after inputting, the rear middle seat belt alarm keeps going off, seats won’t store memory and the rear tailgate takes 2 to 3 attempts to open.
Is this normal for others or just a really bad build?
The rear tailgate and panel alignment is a joke it’s 4x wider once side. Again apparently within ‘tolerance’ but didn’t bother measuring it….
Gutted wanted a car capable of going round the clock and building road trip memories and it’s struggled the first month of ownership with zero support from selling dealership…

Sorry to hear about your trouble. What you need is a good dealership with good service department who will try to figure out these issues

Holy smokes, none of those symptoms are close to normal or par for the course.
All of the time you have invested at the Stealership alone they should of given you a time card and a mug with your name on it....

All kidding aside I would demand a temp replacement and order (if you want) another one, heck your making payments on something that has been a total headache and alot of time at the dealer and that they actually admitted they didn't do anything!
I would of lost it and stuffed there gentiles into there own mouth, after hearing a comment like that.
you dropped good money on this ride and in return you have received headaches to much time spent at the dealer vs your own time a sub par memory a vacation and above all the safety of your family rides on the dealerships words that it's a truck and it's normal.
I'm not even going to attempt whats wrong with it because it doesn't matter what think its their problem and you've been a trooper coping with it.
Like you said 80K and nothing but problems isn't acceptable in my book.

Wow sorry to hear this. My Capstone has 4500 miles and has been flawless except the pop (moving) in the drivers seat.

Get the wheels off it and spin them on a balancer. Eliminates Tires / wheels / weights

What a miserable bummer. I recall there being a sticky caliper issue with some trucks - I think @Eurodriver had some such experience with one of his trucks. He’s also had most every issue one can have with a new truck, despite his efforts to simply cut off the problem with a sawzall or grinder… :boink:

Seriously, though, I had my parking brake cable seize up in the winter and it caused a horrible whomp whomp shaking issue that get like a tire had turned square-shaped. It would eventually release but a few times it happened, it didn’t fully release and I didn’t notice except at highway speed. A sticky caliper could cause the same issue and would be more noticeable at higher speed. It would also cause worse fuel economy.
