My truck's bed cargo light keeps automatically turning on when I shut off the truck, when I lock/unlock/open the doors, and probably in some other situations that I'm unsure of. Basically the light keeps turning on and I have to either constantly hit the button to turn it off, or just watch it be on.

The cabin ceiling light switch is set to "OFF" so I know that's not a factor.

How do I stop the cargo light from automatically turning itself on?

That light SHOULD go out approx 30 sec after exiting vehicle along with key, driver foot light and cabin light, if it’s on ! It will also stay on longer(30 min ??) if a door switch is not in good shape.

Even with the timed shutoff, that shit is still annoying.

It doesn't look like that thread ended up with a solution other than disabling the light entirely. Not sure what I prefer in that case.

Pro/Cons for night near everything and all one can do is find a happy balance. Toyota did us no favor and folks still running incandescent should at least consider LED. I did make a choice and decrease the time on to 15sec.

Put a topper on it and you’ll never see it again. That’s what I did.

Put an LED in it or remove the bulb first though. It's fun to change that light out with a cap on, ask me how I know.

Since this was brought up a few days ago by somebody else I timed my 2002 out of curiosity. My trucks cargo light goes off 20 seconds after the door is shut.

This is a normal function of your truck. The cabin ceiling light switch only controls the cabin ceiling light. The "cargo light" button on the radio bezel controls the bed lights.

I work night shift so I prefer that "courtesy" light coming on when entering or exiting. At the house I can see a good ways behind the truck pretty well with LED bulbs.

Isn’t there a switch to turn it off completely?

Easy fix is remove bulbs if you don’t like the light. Personally, I like mine coming on in case a really bad person is hiding in my bed and wants to rob me or something.

I think you can push the button manually every time before exciting and I think it will kill it.

Had the same issue and removed the bulbs within my first week of owning the truck. Case Closed.

Owned my 2006 Tundra Limited for several years. For the last month or so I have come out to a dead battery. I discovered it was my cargo light suddenly turning itself on. At first I thought I was bumping it on, but I have concluded this is not the case. I have a canopy on the back so the cargo light is pretty much useless to me. Im going to remove the bulbs but am still baffled at these occurrances. I was about to fabricate some sort of cover to prevent accidental engagement of the button but realized that won't solve the issue.

You should really check out this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

That said, do you park outdoors? If you do, there's a specific section in there you need to pay close attention to:

    Electrical stuff ... and keys
    • .....
    • .....
    • .....
    • These trucks usually don't have a ton of other electrical issues. Hidden corrosion inside the battery/alt cables happens. Sometimes, a couple thousand miles after timing belt changes, people will have startup issues because the crank position sensor wasn't properly tucked away and gets rubbed by a belt (pic). There's also a similar problem with camshaft position sensor under the cam cover, where the belt will rub through (pics). There's the rodent issues mentioned earlier. Occasionally, water leaks can send water down into the ECM behind the glovebox (pics), or into the fusebox inside the cab/dash (pics & pics & pics, it happens a LOT). Many drain/vampire issues trace back to aftermarket add-ons whether the owner knows they exist or not - alarms as mentioned earlier, brake controllers, poorly installed trailer receptacles, those are some big ones.
Note the bold text first, paying special attention to the red bold first. It's quite possibly your problem.
