Hey guys, I need some help. I installed a new carrier bearing a couple years ago and it’s loosened up after only 4000 miles. I might have put it in upside down. So which way is “up” on the carrier bearing. I saw it in a video a while back and now after about 2 hours of searching I cannot find it. The bearing is made with 71407512362__A9EA8C5B-5734-4488-AA8E-4CB8BCD28FE6.jpg about 1/2” off center so I guessed lower side down but I’m probably wrong. Any help out there? I know it should be obvious but I’m second guessing myself now.

There should be 2 holes on one side of the casing, and one center hole on the opposite side. The single center hole faces down towards the ground.

Which carrier bearing did you buy to replace it? Off brand will not last. Spicer is the OEM for Toyota.

What does "loosened up" mean? There's naturally play in the bearing. I can shift driveshaft up and down a solid 1/4"- 1/2" and it's the factory original, 75k miles.

IMG_5330.jpg I bought a Toyota OEM to replace the Timken I put in 2 years ago. Agreed, loosened up is a bit vague. I can move it at least 1/2” without trying very hard. The rubber doughnut was loose and moving in the metal retaining ring, also it is sagged out of round, the roller bearing is just fine. I have watched a bunch of videos and nobody seems concerned that the bearing retainer ring is off center about 1/2”. They just bolt it in.

    (Morning update)
I guessed right and it’s in correctly. But I had installed the Timken upside down, not surprised, I have a long history of getting things exactly wrong the first time. No doubt installed upside down led to it developing 1/2” + of vertical and lateral play. My fault and not the bearings. Thank you for the instructions of two holes up and one hole down.

I'm surprised you hadn't noticed any vibration in the driveline with it being mounted upside down. I'd have expected enough change in angle it'd have had an impact.

Haha, I fly helicopters for a living so a little vibration is normal , but … the Timken did a great job of keeping the vibration low.
